New Zealand Cricket has announced its format for the final Super Smash season, set to start on December 27.

The competition format has been altered from previous years, as there will no longer be matches played every day throughout the season.

The Super Smash will feature 10 rounds played across 10 match days over the summer, with three men’s and women’s games each match day.

There will still be double-headers with the men’s and women’s matches being held at the same venue.

The Super Smash is set to be replaced by the proposed franchise NZ20 domestic competition, with the inaugural season likely to start in December next year.

Following the 10 match days, there will be a familiar finals series format consisting of an Elimination Final and Grand Final, set to be held at Eden Park’s outer oval on Auckland Anniversary weekend, January 28-30.

TVNZ will broadcast 24 of the 64 matches live and free on TVNZ+ and TVNZ Duke, including all of the finals matches in Auckland.

Every other match will be live streamed on NZC’s YouTube channel.

In the men’s competition, the Northern Brave will be looking to defend their title after defeating the Canterbury Kings by five wickets at Hagley Oval in the final earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the Wellington Blaze will have their sights set on an eighth title in 10 seasons after they defeated the Auckland Hearts by five wickets to win last season’s competition.

NZC chief executive Geoff Allott said the final season was a chance to celebrate what the competition has provided in New Zealand.

“For more than 20 years, the Super Smash has been the breeding ground for our best players and has given fans a chance to see the depth of talent across our system,” he said.

“This season we want to celebrate that history and all the players who have been part of the Super Smash’s whakapapa.

“We’re incredibly excited to celebrate more than 20 years of Super Smash history this summer, with the finals taking place in Auckland.”
