Sometimes they never do.”

Centene, a $33 billion company based in St. Louis, is built around those very communities. The company runs Medicaid plans in 29 states and sells individual marketplace plans and Medicare Advantage. London, a mainstay of Fortune’s Most Powerful Women list and the youngest CEO in the Fortune 500, said Centene’s 26 million members are “among the poorest, sickest members of the communities that we all live in,” she told Fortune senior writer Sheryl Estrada.

London, who took the CEO role four years ago at age 41, said she joined Centene because she believed health care and technology had reached an inflection point, and she wanted to lead a company that played a role in getting more care to people who are usually last to get it.

According to London, AI offers a massive opportunity to change the way people seek and get medical care, but not in the way it’s mostly used today. Estrada asked London where AI could create the most value, and London said, “Everywhere.” But as of the current moment, it’s not happening.

“The part that’s really depressing right now is that where AI is being deployed at scale, and where there’s a lot of investment happening right now, is in inflationary use cases,” she said.

That means most of the AI effort is going toward driving more revenue in a fee-for-medical-service system, she said. However, just automating the paperwork and the way claims are paid, while valuable in its own right, misses out on a chance to “break the way the system works today” by democratizing care, she said.

In rural areas known as medical deserts because they have so few hospitals that are difficult to reach, AI could enable community health workers to potentially be as capable as the first round of triage in an emergency room for non-acute problems, London said.

“That puts community care back in the community,” she said. “It puts individual care back in the hands of patients, and I think that is the thing that is going to fundamentally change how health care works.”

AI could also lend patients more agency to make decisions about their own care. ChatGPT is not your doctor, although most people are already using it to find out more information about their ailments, hypothetical or otherwise. (London joked that her ChatGPT is completely confused at this point because she asks it about her whole family, including her “hypochondriac husband.”)

But kidding aside, AI used in the right way can make people smarter about their health, more so than most realize. The impact could be significant in terms of medical costs and devoting more funding toward actual care rather than other costs.

“If we can create that level of agency and the ability for individuals to make the first couple of decisions themselves, that is actually how you bend the cost curve,” she said.

Getting there is still a work in progress, London said. For now, Centene is using AI in administrative communications with members, she said, but the goal is for interactive tools to eventually help patients take first steps on their own. And the administrative cost savings aren’t to be minimized.

“Every dollar that we can save in the administration of health care, we can apply to benefits.”

The latest innovations and breakthroughs in health care don’t get routed to the sickest people, they usually go…

[34
97665,134,12653,527,39209,12551,51595,308856,111,139,69
post-629513","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-healthcare","tag-fortune-500","tag-health","tag-health-insurance","tag-healthcare","tag-medicaid","tag-medicare","tag-most-powerful-women","tag-mpw-summit","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz
["GET
