A set of new average speed cameras have been switched on at a section of State Highway 1 in Manawatū-Whanganui.

The two cameras, which measure how long it takes motorists to drive between them, were set up between Sanson and Foxton.

One camera is set up just south of Motuiti Road, with the other just north of Speedy and Penny Roads near the intersection with SH3.

The cameras can determine a vehicle’s average speed by recording the time it takes to pass each one.

“Expect to be fined if your average speed is over the speed limit – in other words, if you’ve travelled between the cameras too quickly,” NZ Transport Agency said.

Signs were installed before the cameras, giving drivers a chance to check their speed.

“Exceeding the speed limit is illegal,” NZTA said. “Our aim is to reduce the number of people travelling over the speed limit and lessen the likelihood of a serious or fatal crash.

“If you travel at or below the speed limit, you won’t be fined.”

All fines from camera-issued infringements would go into the Government Consolidated Fund, not to NZTA.

The agency has installed dozens of average speed safety cameras across the country, and has touted their effectiveness.
