Collectively, the three firms oversee more than $27 billion in assets under management or advisement (AUM/AUA), according to the company.

The launch is not a new acquisition but a rebranding and structural formalization of a portfolio Sammons has assembled over five years. Beacon Capital Management was acquired in 2021, NorthRock Partners joined through a strategic partnership in 2023, and Wealthcare was added through a June 2025 acquisition from NewSpring Holdings.

Criterion president Michael Mock framed the rebrand as the beginning of a growth phase, not a culmination. “Over the past five years, these businesses have been assembled specifically to design and build a broad differentiated wealth management platform,” Mock said in a statement. “Criterion combines its financial strength and access to capital to deliver cutting-edge wealth advisory solutions to our advisors, clients, and partners.”

Each of the three founding firms retains its own brand and operational independence under the Criterion umbrella – a structure that mirrors approaches gaining traction across the wider RIA consolidation landscape. RIA dealmaking is on pace for a record number of transactions in 2026, with serial acquirers competing for a finite pool of quality advisory firms.

The Criterion model, rooted in permanent, employee-owned capital, is designed to appeal to advisors who want institutional backing without surrendering their autonomy. “Today’s wealth advisors seek partners that understand and preserve their independence while providing the resources and stability they need to grow,” Mock said.

Building through acquisitions and technology

Criterion has stated its intention to pursue growth on two tracks simultaneously: continued acquisitions and direct investment in technology and talent across its three advisory firms. The strategy closely tracks a broader pattern among larger platforms. Acquired RIA assets nearly doubled in the first half of 2026, according to Fidelity analysis, as deal sizes climb alongside deal counts.

What distinguishes Criterion’s position, at least in its own framing, is the nature of its capital. Unlike many RIA aggregators backed by private equity with defined exit timelines, Criterion draws on Sammons Financial Group’s structure as a subsidiary of Sammons Enterprises – one of the largest privately held, employee-owned companies in the United States.

That structure, the company argues, affords a longer capital horizon than typical PE-backed competitors, an important distinction for advisory firms weighing partnership decisions.

The decision to formalize a separate holding company identity reflects a broader trend of insurers carving out distinct wealth management identities. Several financial services firms entered the RIA space with fresh branding in early 2026, including Farmers, which debuted Farmers Asset Management as a standalone advisory entity.

Three firms, one platform

The Criterion family covers materially different segments of the advisory market.

Beacon Capital Management, based in Dayton, Ohio, operates as a next-generation RIA and turnkey asset management program, managing approximately $4.1 billion in assets as of June 2026 and serving fee-based financial advisors. NorthRock Partners, headquartered in Minneapolis with offices across the country including the Bay Area, offers full-service financial and lifestyle advisory services. Wealthcare, with offices in Philadelphia and Richmond, Virginia, manages approximately $10.1 billion in assets and is known for its goals-based GDX360 platform, which supports an affiliated network of independent financial advisors.

Together, the three firms address investment management, financial planning, and advisor platform services, giving Criterion a range of capabilities without forcing any single firm to stretch beyond its core competency.

The timing of the rebranding is deliberate. The independent and hybrid RIA channels continue to attract advisors migrating from wirehouse and broker-dealer models, and established aggregators are competing aggressively for both talent and acquisitions. Criterion’s introduction as a named market participant, backed by $27 billion in assets and long-term capital, positions it as a credible new name in that competition.

Mock described the rebrand as a milestone rather than a destination. “What matters most is what the Criterion name enables us to build,” he said. “Criterion reflects our confidence in the future of this business and the opportunity we see to thoughtfully grow a wealth management organization designed for the long term.”

The insurance giant’s new holding company unites three RIA firms and $27 billion in assets under one independent…

[14
138,135673,246,111,139,69,244,245,243349,309062
post-630335","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-personal-finance","tag-business","tag-criterion","tag-finance","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-personal-finance","tag-personalfinance","tag-ria-firms","tag-sammons
["GET
