The way you played today, you might get selected for the next game’.”

That game also saw New Zealand try some new combinations. Fien had started the tournament as the starting hooker with Thomas Leuluai at halfback, however the pair switched roles.

The win gave the Kiwis a psychological boost heading into their semi-final against England in Brisbane, a venue where they had lost their previous eight internationals.

It was at this point that Bennett started to show his value as a coach and leader, and that left Fien feeling confident earlier than most they could win the World Cup.

“Wayne just has this way of making you feel invincible and making everybody feel like if they just do their role then something very special’s in front of us,” he said.

“I remember walking out of that meeting just going holy shit, you know, we’re not just going to win this semi-final, we’re actually going to win the whole World Cup.

“He had such a calming influence and it was one of those talks you get from a coach that you just have goosebumps and tingles for weeks.”

That confidence came through as they came flying out the gates to eventually claim a 32-22 win and book their place in a second successive World Cup final.

Australia reached the final after beating Fiji 52-0 and the media were that confident, they started a “Bash Benji” campaign, which he later revealed upset his mother.

“We try to stay away from that stuff but we’re all human and we have phones and TVs obviously, so we see that stuff and our families talk to us,” Hohaia said.

“There was a ‘Bash Benji’ campaign going on and they were going to throttle him and they were going to bomb the crap out of me and I was going to drop every ball that came my way and our forwards were not going to get any go forward and they were just going to be too classy for us.

“That’s the confidence of the Australian media I guess and their team didn’t necessarily deter us too much in in our determination to overcome all that stuff. Photo / Photosport

The first 60 minutes

Before a ball was kicked, there was tension in the air as the Kiwis delivered their most iconic haka, led by Adam Blair.

After they started, Australia advanced and New Zealand followed suit to the point where the players’ faces were almost touching – and the crowd loved it.

Issac Luke was staring down David Williams, Blair was in the face of Paul Gallen while Marshall challenged Cameron Smith, who was standing arm in arm with Folau.

The game kicked off and it was clear a physical encounter was brewing, but it appeared New Zealand might be falling into a similar trap as before when Marshall missed a chance to score, losing control as he attempted to ground the ball, while he also failed to find touch from a penalty.

The game opened up in the 12th minute when Slater burst through a hole after Marshall slipped while attempting to make a tackle, before Slater threw the pass back inside to Lockyer to score.

The Aussies scored almost immediately afterwards when Williams made a break down the right wing to go over untouched under the posts.

They could have added a third try, but like Marshall, Lockyer lost control attempting to ground the ball.

Despite trailing by 10 points, Ropati said Bennett had urged the team not to panic.

“They would start real fast, blow teams off in the first 20 but it was that next 40 minutes, either side of halftime, [that] was crucial,” Ropati said. “That’s where Wayne said we could get them.

“If you can just absorb everything even to the fact where you accept that they’re going to just rain tries on you, just accept it, just deal with it, try and stop as much as you can and then in the 20 minutes either side of the half, you’re going to get joy.”

The Kiwis had weathered the storm and they eventually got on the board when Jeremy Smith charged over from close range.

It was a four-pointer many of the players described as a game-changing play.

New Zealand were back on the attack and it appeared Marshall had lost the ball attempting to step his way through the defence, but the ball bounced perfectly for David Fa’alogo to pick it up, going on a big run then passing it to Ropati to score.

<img alt="David Fa'alogo passes the ball to Jerome Ropati to score. Photo / Photosport

Ropati admitted at the time he crossed the line that he was unsure if the try would stand, but after a lengthy review, it was deemed Anthony Laffranchi had stripped the ball, the try was given and the Kiwis led 12-10.

Australia would have the last say before the break, though, when they moved the ball through the hands and eventually Lockyer found his way over for his second try and a 16-12 lead.

For Ropati, a significant moment in the match came right after halftime, when Craig Fitzgibbon dropped the ball on the second tackle.

“We looked at each other and went man, these guys are capitulating,” Ropati said.

“Wayne said to us, if you stay with them around that 60-minute period, they’ve never been at that position before, they’ve never been under that pressure for years as a team and they’re not going to know what to do.”

Fitzgibbon’s mistake allowed the Kiwis to get on the attack and Vatuvei crossed the line shortly after, but he didn’t ground the ball while making contact with the corner flag, which back then cancelled out any potential try.

But it didn’t take them long to regain the lead when Hohaia made a daring run, stepping through the defence to score.

That put the Kiwis back in front, leading 18-16, and they went into the last period of the game full of confidence, but expected Australia to throw everything at them.

Little did they know that what was ahead was two of the most audacious moments ever seen on a football field that would lay the platform for their historic win.

<img alt="Benji Marshall's try for the Kiwis in the Rugby League World Cup final. Photos / Photosport

The game-changing final quarter that sealed victory

Just as the clock ticked over the 60-minute mark, Marshall kicked early in the set and stabbed the ball down towards the left wing.

Slater caught the ball on the full with an audacious one-handed grab and opted to take a risk by making a daring dash along the sideline instead of taking the ball infield.

However, there was no space to make a run and after being pushed by Vatuvei towards the sideline, Slater flung the ball infield. However, there were no Kangaroos teammates there and Marshall swooped on the pass to score and make it a 22-16 game.

Ropati said Slater had a history of making similar plays against him and Vatuvei for the Melbourne Storm against the New Zealand Warriors, but this time it didn’t work.

“He has this little right-foot, left-foot step and that kick there for some reason I could read that Billy was going to take a risk and try go outside Manu,” Ropati said.

“I know how Manu thinks and he thought the exact same thing. Photo / Photosport

The Wayne Bennett effect

The inclusion of a super coach like Bennett was massive in the Kiwis’ success.

By 2008, Bennett had already established himself as one of the greatest coaches in rugby league history, having won five State of Origin titles with Queensland, a Tri Nations final with Australia and six premierships with the Brisbane Broncos. Nearly two decades later, he remains a prominent figure in the game.

For many of the players, the World Cup was the only opportunity they had to work under Bennett, who brought a different dynamic to the coaching staff alongside Kearney.

While Bennett had a sympathetic side, he could also be stern when the situation demanded it.

Bennett was described as the coach who brought a calming influence, while Kearney was the connection piece who brought the players and the culture sides together, while also running the day-to-day stuff.

Ropati remembers that being particularly evident after the Kiwis’ opening defeat to Australia.

“Losing to the Aussies wasn’t the hardest bit, it was the video session directly after it,” he said with a laugh.

“Wayne Bennett took us through that and it was about two hours, the most painful session I’ve been through.

“We came off that field thinking, ‘Nah, this is kind of typical’. Having lost his grandfather shortly before the tournament, Harrison had already been dealing with plenty away from the field.

As the final approached, he was also struggling to sleep, with the magnitude of the occasion beginning to sink in.

An honest conversation with Bennett proved pivotal.

“I found it really difficult to sleep actually leading in, just from where I’d come from, like not playing much game time,” Harrison said.

“He’s like, ‘Mate, how have you been, struggling with sleeping?’ I was like, ‘Yeah … six weeks ago, this is the last place I was expecting to be.’ It was just like a whirlwind for me.

“He said, ‘Well, man, I’ve watched you.
