But National’s Transport spokesperson Chris Bishop said too many of Auckland’s suburban streets were clogged and hard to get through.<\/p>\n
Ockham Residential developer Mark Todd said that was an exaggeration.<\/p>\n
“This is just propaganda. We don’t have streets clogged with cars.<\/p>\n
“Developers are very sensitive to what they can and can’t sell, and there are very few houses built in suburban areas with no car parking.<\/p>\n

“We’re very sick of both sides of the house interfering with Auckland’s Unitary Plan.”<\/p>\n
He said bringing back minimum car parking requirements would increase house prices and car use.<\/p>\n
“[Removing minimum car parking requirements] has been hugely successful for Auckland’s housing affordability and supply.”<\/p>\n
“This is a step backwards. It’ll make housing more scarce and unaffordable.<\/p>\n “Auckland’s on a road to be the size of Sydney or Melbourne. If you legislate on one or two car parks for every suburban house you’ll get tens of thousands more cars on the road every year.”<\/p>\n He believed National was trying to appeal to “wealthy voters complaining about intensification in their suburbs”.<\/p>\n “Clearly this is a sop to their base in a couple of blue ribbon seats,” he said. “This is the tail wagging the dog.”<\/p>\n
