The AI unwind has been called a few times previously, so who really knows? but serious money is being lost in Japan and Korea today especially. Locally, the unexpected Aussie labour market miss is giving us an added negative twist as well.

MORTGAGE RATE CHANGES
No changes to note today. All current mortgage rates are here. And note, you can compare mortgage offers with our unique calculator that takes into account other costs and cashback incentives, here.

TERM DEPOSIT/SAVINGS RATE CHANGES
Heretaunga Building Society has added +5 bps to two key TD rates. All updated term deposit rates less than 1 year are here, for 1-5 years, they are here.

BETTER JOB MARKET
Rising job ads are up nearly +8% year-on-year, SEEK says in its September Employment Report shows. But it also shows little-change from August.

NO SPRING BOUNCE
There is a gloomy outlook for the housing market as summer approaches. Potential buyers are likely to have all the power in negotiations as the housing market heads into what could be a rough summer for residential real estate. We are well into a situation where the generational expectation that “houses are good investments” no longer applies. Housing is shelter, its original function. Demographics likely mean the boom times may never return.

FMA GETS ANOTHER SMALL FRY
Christchurch lender 4J Enterprise that mainly served members of the city’s Filipino community has been fined $15,000 for providing consumer credit without being registered on the Financial Service Providers Register. Its key officers were sentence to community work.

NZX50 RETREATS
As at 3pm, the overall NZX50 index is down -0.3% today. From a week ago it is up +0.1%; from six months ago it is up +4.8%. From a year ago it is up +3.0% now. Market heavyweight F&P Healthcare is down less than -0.1% so far today. Oceania leads gains over Mainfreight, Ryman and Stride. Vector, Port of Tauranga, Fletcher and Infratil are the main decliners.

HARD TO WIN AT NZGB OR LGFA TENDERS
The Treasury tendered another $450 mln in three maturities today. They got 101 bids worth almost $1.8 bln but only 25 of them were successful. In addition, $25 mln was available for an inflation indexed bond and that attracted 32 bids worth #$32 mln. Only eight were allocated anything. Meanwhile, the LGFA tendered $100 mln in two maturities, attracting $370 mln via 31 bids. Only eight won anything here too.

RBNZ & FMA DETAIL THEIR SUPERVISORY EXPECTATIONS ON THE CYBER RISKS OF FRONTIER AI
The Reserve Bank (RBNZ) and Financial Markets Authority have released a statement on their supervisory expectations for regulated entities on cyber risks associated with frontier AI. This highlights three key risks; increased cyber risk, evolving governance and oversight challenges, and growing third-party and concentration risk. The statement is here.

NZ’S BIG 4 BANKS SURVIVE IN DIRE STRESS TESTING SCENARIO, RBNZ & APRA SAY
The RBNZ and Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) have completed their first Trans-Tasman stress testing exercise of banks since 2017. A “severe but plausible scenario” tested the combined impact of; escalating geopolitical tensions, a prolonged oil-price shock and severe recessions in Australia and New Zealand, leading to 10.5% peak unemployment, and a 35% fall in NZ house prices. There was also a three-notch credit ratings downgrade, higher bank funding costs, disruption to market funding, and a cyber incident affecting an offshore banking operation. The RBNZ and APRA say; despite substantial financial losses and pressure on capital and liquidity, NZ’s 4 biggest banks – ANZ, ASB, BNZ and Westpac – stayed above their minimum capital requirements and continued lending throughout the stress test scenario. However, banks’ capital buffers to be used in times of stress were significantly depleted.

WOOL UPDATE
At the latest wool auctions, the market tended to favour buyers despite the small offering. Buying was subdued and selective, with demand focused mainly on the more stylish and better-prepared lots. No merino wool was traded today with the view to have a more comprehensive offering for the auction next week. With most of the ewes now been shorn, the bulk of wool coming forward for sale is largely hogget wool types that are showing good production and colour.

BUMP IN THE ROAD FOR PART-TIMERS
There was a very big surprise in the Australian labour markets data released today for September. You will recall they added +29,300 jobs in August and were expected to add another +20,000 in September. In fact, jobs contracted there by -39,300. It was distorted by the even sharper fall in part-time jobs, down -73,700 and saved somewhat by a +34,400 gain in full-time jobs. The number of unemployed people only rose marginally and their jobless rates was unchanged at 4.7% although that remains at a five year high.

A PREVENTABLE CRISIS
Singapore’s haze is turning dangerously unhealthy. There are a lot of angry people at Indonesia in Singapore and Malaysia at present.

SWAP RATES FALL
Wholesale swap rates will likely be about -4 bps lower today. It was only the long end that fell away. Keep an eye on our chart below which will record the final positions closer to 5pm.
