Musk said the car was equipped with 10 nozzles and \u201cultra high-pressure air tanks\u201d to propel itself into the air and accelerate quickly on the ground.<\/p>\n
The car can go from 0 to 100 km\/h in under one second and reach a top speed of 370km\/h.<\/p>\n
The tech billionaire described the development as \u201cwhat happens when you have a collaboration with the world\u2019s best car company and the world\u2019s best rocket company\u201d, referring to Tesla and SpaceX.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt can basically fly like a rocket,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u2018On the roads\u2019<\/p>\n
Musk said the Roadster was \u201cnot necessarily a safety-optimised car\u201d but it would \u201cbe an actual car that\u2019s on the roads\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not sure it\u2019s necessarily legal in all jurisdictions, but there will be such a car that someone can own,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Musk said the vehicle would go into production in 2028, though he\u2019s known for announcing release dates for his Tesla or SpaceX products that end up being pushed back by several years.<\/p>\n
The unveiling of the Roadster was postponed many times and had been expected for at least nine years.<\/p>\n
On Tesla\u2019s website, interested customers can reserve a \u201cPerformance\u201d Roadster model or a \u201cThrust\u201d model, with boosted thrusters. The final sale price has not been disclosed.<\/p>\n
American aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss debuted the first flying car prototype in 1917.<\/p>\n
But successful designs have become more seriously contemplated only in recent years as electric motors and high-performance batteries have advanced.<\/p>\n
