A team of researchers from Germany conducted the study and published their findings in Psoriasis: Targets and Therapy.<\/p>\n
The investigators explained that MASLD \u201cfrequently remains undetected in clinical routine diagnostics\u201d and that they wanted to investigate the condition in the context of psoriasis as an \u201cindependent risk factor for MASLD.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eligible patients for the single-center retrospective study included individuals with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis who were admitted to the hospital between 2015 and 2024.<\/p>\n
For the study, the investigators defined MASLD as \u201chepatic steatosis,\u201d as determined via imaging and other medical records, in combination with at least one \u201ccardiometabolic risk factor, after exclusion of other liver disease and harmful alcohol use.\u201d<\/p>\n
Laboratory markers, such as serum adipokines and cytokines, were calculated through bead-based multiplex assays, while Whitney U and Fisher exact tests were used to compare the study cohorts, the study authors wrote. In addition, study associations were analyzed using \u201cSpearman correlation and BMI-adjusted multiple linear regression.\u201d<\/p>\n
The study compared 17 patients with plaque psoriasis without MASLD (MASLD-) and 42 patients with plaque psoriasis with MASLD (MASLD+). Patients in the MASLD+ cohort presented with higher total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, BMI, and C-reactive protein (CRP), and were more likely to be diagnosed with dyslipidemia.<\/p>\n
Across other laboratory parameters, patients in the MASLD+ group had significantly lower serum adiponectin levels (12.3 vs 22.1\u00a0\u00b5g\/mL, P=0.042). However, leptin, adipsin, all cytokines, and resistin remained similar across study cohorts.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, although adiponectin was found to be inversely associated with BMI (\u03c1=\u22120.29; P=0.046), investigators adjusted for that factor and reported that the \u201cgroup difference was attenuated.\u201d<\/p>\n
