Again. I\u2019m often reminded by my primary care doctor that cancer is a \u201cdisease of aging,\u201d meaning that cancer risk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/age\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">increases dramatically<\/a> each decade after age 50. Being 60-something puts me in the demographic crosshairs, and my health history compounds my risk. In my twenties I was treated with high-dose chemotherapy for testicular cancer, which created a risk of developing a different form of cancer later on. I\u2019ve got a family history of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/10\/13\/what-know-about-pulmonary-adenocarcinoma\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/10\/13\/what-know-about-pulmonary-adenocarcinoma\/\">lung cancer<\/a> (my mom) and ovarian cancer (my sister), and doctors have spotted several precancerous polyps over the course of regular colonoscopies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I\u2019ll confess: I\u2019m terrified of getting cancer.
