Last year<\/a>, we reported that Diablo Cody was getting the (Satanically inclined boy) band back together, announcing her intention to make a sequel to her 2009 cult film Jennifer\u2019s Body\u2014plans that Cody has described this week as \u201cimminent.\u201d Talking on the\u00a0Petticoat Revolution\u00a0podcast<\/a>, Cody revealed not only that she\u2019s gearing up to return to the story of teen-girl-turned-flesh-eating-succubus Jennifer Check, but that she\u2019s hoping this new view of the character will make audiences more \u201csympathetic\u201d to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cJennifer is a sympathetic character for me, before and after the transformation,\u201d Cody notes in the interview. \u201c\u201cI mean, she is very isolated, she\u2019s very lonely, she\u2019s very insecure. Everybody remembers Jennifer when she\u2019s like, \u2018I am a god,\u2019 or when she\u2019s at her most radiant and at her most powerful. But people forget about these moments in the movie where she\u2019s like a shell of herself, she\u2019s just exsanguinated almost.\u201d Although she\u2019s remaining tight-lipped about plot details\u2014which feels important, given how the first movie ended\u2014Cody added \u201cone fun thing\u201d to the discussion of the sequel. Cautioning that \u201cI can\u2019t talk about it too much,\u201d she stated that, \u201cI felt like in the new movie, I was able to explore even more about why Jennifer is sympathetic and what she\u2019s been through. And there is absolutely, to me, a loneliness and a poignancy to that character that people don\u2019t always recognize.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although\u00a0Deadline\u00a0has apparently confirmed<\/a> that Cody is developing the Jennifer\u2019s Body 2 sequel at 20th Century Fox, actual details about the project are pretty much nil. That includes the all-important matter of casting\u2014although stars Amanday Seyfried and Megan Fox have both expressed an interest in returning to the film\u2019s universe nearly two decades later. For her part, Cody was complimentary toward Fox\u2019s work in the original film in the\u00a0Petticoat Revolution interview, saying that she successfully captured both the more confidently monstrous and human and lonely aspects of the character.<\/p>\n
