Nate Huyser of Orange City says he used to battle depression and anxiety. Now, he shares his story to help others to face similar mental health struggles.(KTIV)<\/p>\nSIOUX CENTER, Iowa (KTIV) – One Northwest Iowa man says he once thought there was no hope after a mental health crisis. <\/p>\n
After reaching out for help, he is sharing his experience to remind others they\u2019re not alone. <\/p>\n
\u201cI thought there was no hope,\u201d Nate Huyser of Orange City says he used to really struggle with depression and anxiety. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was very sick, suicidal,\u201d Huyser said. <\/p>\n
He said he first sought help through his college. <\/p>\n
Huyser described, \u201cI had major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, so the two really feed off of each other and the depression just feels like deep despair, darkness, anxiety feels like I\u2019m being chased by a wild animal.\u201d <\/p>\n
After many episodes and attacks, he began reaching out for help; he says he began a path toward recovery and now shares his experience to encourage others to talk about their struggles. <\/p>\n
Support for individuals and families<\/p>\n
The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Northwest Iowa offers support groups for people with mental health conditions and their families.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a support group for those individuals with mental health issues,\u201d said Kir Cosgrove, the group\u2019s vice president. \u201cAnd then we also have a support group for friends and family of those individuals with mental health issues.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been going to NAMI since 2017 with my parents. I wouldn\u2019t be alive without my parents\u2019 love and support. NAMI helped educate us further on mental health conditions and connect with others with similar circumstances,\u201d said Huyser.<\/p>\n
Huyser encourages people facing mental health struggles to keep talking about them. He said he wants others to know they are not alone and that help is available, saying, \u201cYou can maintain hope that things can get better.\u201d <\/p>\n

His journey is transforming the people in his lives. \u201cMy younger sister, became a psychiatric Physician Assistant. Her knowledge, as well as love and support, helped save my life in 2022 and has been so helpful as I continually navigate my mental health and treatments.\u201d<\/p>\n
His wife, Lizzy Rice Huyser, is studying to become a mental health counselor. She said, \u201cWhat I wish I had understood was that mental health can affect everyone and anyone. It doesn\u2019t really discriminate on who you are or where you live or where you come from, that everyone can struggle with their mental health and that there is help out there. There is hope.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fourteen years after his crisis, Nate Huyser said he is grateful to be alive and doing well. \u201cIt\u2019s been a long battle, and I\u2019m just really lucky to be alive and doing as well as I am.\u201d <\/p>\n
