James Haller, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Vesper Wealth Advisors, described at the recent Middle East Private Capital Forum 2026 how his firm has built a proprietary platform that blends AI agents with deterministic engines, and why he believes that the technology’s most useful applications demand reliability, augmenting the adviser rather than automating them away.

The panel, hosted by Hubbis at the Shangri-La Dubai and chaired by Michael Stanhope, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Hubbis, examined how private wealth firms in the region are deploying AI in practice. Haller’s contribution focused on the economics of building bespoke technology at a small firm, the non-negotiable role of human engagement in complex family relationships, and the importance of data protection in any AI-enabled workflow.

Key Takeaways

Vesper has built a proprietary AI-enabled platform designed to consolidate information from multiple sources, with Haller highlighting how AI has collapsed development resource requirements.
Designed for Vesper’s own use, the platform is now being extended beyond the firm including client-facing applications, according to Haller.
Haller argued that AI cannot currently replicate the human understanding required to navigate complex family relationships and succession planning.
Data confidentiality is a central concern, with Haller emphasising that confidentiality should be treated as a prerequisite for the technology to be useful.
Differentiation for a lean, independent firm comes from access to investment opportunities through networks and teams, which Haller said is not something AI can replicate.

Building What Once Took a Bank

Haller described Vesper’s approach to AI as driven by a specific problem: the cost and fragmentation of the third-party platforms that a multi-family office typically relies on. Clients, he said, pay for multiple services, from asset aggregators to research platforms, each operating in isolation.

“We focus across various platforms that our clients have to pay for today,” Haller said. “They could be aggregators, they could be research platforms.” Vesper’s response was to build its own, consolidating asset aggregation with research delivery in a single environment that intelligently considers the client’s context, including wealth structure, risk appetite and objectives.

Haller described two main objectives for the platform: consolidating client holdings from multiple sources and producing research tailored to the markets, jurisdictions and clients the firm follows. “Whether it’s daily research, daily updates that I want that are tailored not only to the markets, but in the markets that we’re following, but also even our clients, so that we’re making sure we aggregate those updates and that information as it’s coming in as well,” Haller said.

The shift goes deeper than consolidation. AI compressed what used to be a long, resource-heavy build, letting Vesper create in months a platform that would once have demanded a large in-house team. “It’s been a really interesting exercise to see how quickly we are able to scale a fully customisable platform,” he said.

Built first for Vesper’s own use, the platform is now ready to open to clients and others — the first move, Haller suggested, in something considerably larger.

The Smartest Application: Aggregation with Protection

When asked to identify the most valuable use of AI at the firm, Haller returned to aggregation. For a multi-family office drawing information from multiple sources, bringing everything into one place is more than an operational gain. Pulled together, the fragments become a living model of a client’s entire wealth: every asset, the structures that hold it, and the jurisdictions it spans.

“Aggregating the kind of plethora of information around my clients,” Haller said. This model gives a family office the research and reporting depth that once required dedicated teams of a global institution, a capability AI has now put within reach for firms that are a fraction of the size.

But Haller was equally emphatic about the data protection requirements that accompany any such consolidation. He said he takes the confidentiality dimension “extremely seriously” and described specific precautions the firm takes when working with AI tools.

“I come from a Swiss banking background as well, so I use code names,” he said. Beneath that discretion sits a defence-in-depth architecture built to regulated-industry standards: tightly controlled access, continuous authentication, tamper-proof audit trails, and deliberate control over where client data resides and how the system itself is secured. The principle, as he described it, is that protecting client data is a prerequisite for the technology to be useful rather than a constraint on it. “When you can protect the client from the data perspective, that actually develops something of a tool for not only internal but also external,” he said.

Haller’s remarks highlighted the importance of protecting client information as firms develop AI-enabled platforms, particularly when considering applications beyond internal use.

Family Complexity Requires Human Presence

On the question of whether AI could eventually handle client conversations directly, Haller was clear: not yet, and not in any near-term scenario for the types of clients Vesper serves.

“I would say not yet,” he said. “I think we are at the beginning there.”

His reasoning centred on the nature of the relationships involved. Ultra-high-net-worth families in the Gulf, Haller said, present “intricate complexities” that are emotional, relationship-driven and bound up with succession planning. Understanding those dynamics, he argued, requires direct human engagement.

“I think there still is the very important exercise of being able to witness that first hand,” Haller said. “It’s not something AI can pick up on now.”

He drew a distinction between the relational aspects of advisory work and the operational follow-through. Haller identified execution, follow-up tasks and administrative coordination as areas where AI could increasingly support advisers. “When it comes to executing, sure,” he said. “I don’t see now or in the very near future we’re executing and organising a lot of these follow-ups and action items. They are very possible in that realm.”

The boundary, as Haller described it, lies between what can be systematised and what depends on reading a room, understanding family dynamics and navigating the unspoken concerns that shape how wealth is structured and transferred.

Access as the Real Differentiator

When the panel turned to what sets each firm apart, Haller’s answer had little to do with technology. For a boutique firm operating in the ultra-high-net-worth space, he said, differentiation comes from access, specifically access to investment opportunities that cannot be sourced through a platform or a search engine.

“Building the team around you that has that unique and institutional access,” Haller said. “That’s not going to be something that AI can go out and find.”

He emphasised that the human element extends beyond the client relationship to the investment side of the business. In private markets and alternatives, the ability to source and evaluate opportunities depends on networks, personal relationships and the credibility that comes with a track record. “Especially on the private markets alternative side, the human element to those relationships and to that access is not only with the client,” Haller said. “It’s to the investment opportunities themselves, that you bring to your client.”

The point positioned Vesper’s advantage not beyond AI’s current reach but outside its nature altogether. While the firm is using AI to improve internal efficiency and consolidate information, the competitive advantage it claims rests on capabilities that are built through people rather than technology. The best opportunities never reach a screen. They move by phone call and introduction, between people who’ve known each other for years and won’t risk the relationship on a bad one. That access is earned — through reputation, discretion, and a track record. Automate that away and the efficiency is beside the point; the exclusivity goes with it.

Technology as Infrastructure, Not Identity

Across his remarks, Haller described a firm that treats AI as operational infrastructure rather than as a defining feature of its proposition. The platform the firm has built serves real functions: it brings together what is scattered across costly, disconnected third-party platforms, and frees up time for the work that still depends on human relationships. But when Haller spoke about what clients value and what distinguishes the firm from its competitors, the emphasis shifted consistently towards relationships, access and the irreducible complexity of working with wealthy families in the region. His account suggested a firm that is investing in technology seriously but without confusing the tool with the service it supports.

For an independent multi-family office serving ultra-high-net-worth clients in the Gulf, the value of AI is not measured…

[14
138,246,111,139,69,244,245
post-634923","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-personal-finance","tag-business","tag-finance","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-personal-finance","tag-personalfinance
["GET
