The actor, 43, knew he would have a hard time saying goodbye to his vigilante character after finding out that the Marvel show will be ending after its third season. However, he didn’t expect how the heartbreaking news would affect his 6-year-old son.

While speaking with PEOPLE at New York Comic Con on Oct. 8 at Javits Center in New York City, he says, “I don’t think I am prepared for it. It’s been 12 years of my life. I think it’s very likely that at the end of my career, whenever that is, this character will be the most important to me. I don’t know if you can prepare yourself for that. I’m trying to prepare my son for it more than I’m preparing myself. He’s devastated.”

Cox, who first played Daredevil in the original television series that aired from 2015 to 2018, explains that his son has just started coming around to his dad playing a superhero.

“He’s 6,” the actor says of his son, whose name has not been publicly shared. “So he’s just coming on to the ‘my dad’s a superhero’ kind of stuff. When I told him, the color drained from his face. It didn’t occur to me that he’d be so impacted by it, so it’s very sweet.”

Cox notes that transitioning out of the role is going to be a challenge.

“I think it’s going to be weird. But at the moment, I’m just so grateful for the time that we’ve had, all the stories we’ve got to tell, all the hours and hours. I think I’ve played Daredevil for 70 hours or something crazy. It has been such a gift and the great honor of my career,” he says.

Cox shares his son and daughter with his wife, television producer Samantha Thomas, whom he met while they were both working on the original series. Looking back on his 12 years with the story, he says, “My life is unrecognizable in those 12 years. I met my wife on day one of Daredevil and obviously have a family now. Those things massively shift your perspectives.”

A valuable lesson that he says he learned while working on the show as an actor and executive producer is creating a positive work environment.

Cox says, “I’ve learned how important it is to have a happy set, to try to contribute to an environment where people are excited to be there, happy to be there, engaged in the process, and enjoying the life of making television, whether you’re an actor or a grip or a director or a sound guy, every single department, all the people that go in to make that show.”

He adds, “I think it’s really important to try and make that a really fun, enjoyable, loving experience. And that has been my experience on every season of Daredevil. It’s been an absolute journey.”

What does it do to his psyche? If you think from his perspective, he was trying to help. All this time he’s been trying to help people, to help the city, and where he’s ended up is at the bottom of the pit,” he says.

In March, the actor told PEOPLE that a challenge he has overcome and feels proud of is “being a parent.”

“Sometimes with the challenges that come with being a father and a parent, being right-sized in a moment that’s very challenging feels like a huge victory,” Cox said. “I’m sorry if that’s trite, but I think when you’re able to be a good version of yourself, despite the fact that things are very difficult, and you’re very tired and very overwhelmed, and all of those things, is a good victory.”

Born Again, created by Dario Scardapane, also stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Margarita Levieva and Deborah Ann Woll. Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter, who respectively play Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, made a special appearance in season 2 and are expected to appear in season 3.

At New York Comic Con, it was confirmed that Finn Jones will reprise his role as Iron Fist in the third season.

The first two seasons of Daredevil: Born Again are streaming on Disney+.
