The Silver Ferns have immediately turned their focus to Wednesday night’s second Test in Christchurch, warning the Australian Diamonds there is plenty more to come after firing the opening shot of the Constellation Cup.

Having dominated the first three quarters in Auckland on Sunday to build a 12-goal cushion, New Zealand withstood a late Australian fightback to seal a 56-50 victory.

But rather than celebrate opening the series in style, captain Karin Burger made it clear the Ferns are only just warming up.

“If this is the calibre of what our core group looks like, watch out for the next three games,” Burger told the post-match press conference.

The key driver behind New Zealand’s dominant start was a relentless defensive engine room featuring standout Pacific talent.

Mila Reuelu-Buchanan brought crucial energy off the bench in the third quarter at wing defence, a new role for the former centre and wing attack, who features in the squad alongside fellow Pacific stars Peta Toeava and Martina Salmon.

Reuelu-Buchanan made no secret of her approach to shifting line-ups before taking the court.

“A non-negotiable for me is to be a pest and grind out my wing attacks so they go quiet,” she told Sports Nation’s Millsy and Guy. “That’s what my role is and that’s what I’ll aim to do when I’m out there on court.”

That relentless disruption, combined with Kelly Jackson and Burger in the goal circle, left Australia struggling to find answers through the middle quarters.

Burger credits the squad’s tight bond for how smoothly they adapted on the night.

“When we do have our time on court, the connection is next to nothing, and it shows out there on court. We’re working to everybody’s strengths and that means we can adapt how we need to and that just showed in that game.”

Jackson echoed that sentiment, pointing out that New Zealand’s flexible defensive structures are built to shut down any line-up the opposition throws at them.

“We pride ourselves now on being adaptable – that whoever they put out there on court we can adjust,” she told journalists.

While the Ferns took control with 58 per cent of possession, three intercepts, and 16 deflections, Australia managed to cut the final margin to six goals, a late push that Diamonds skipper Jamie-Lee Price knows could be crucial in a tight series.

“[We’re] really happy to be able to get the score down to what it was. We know that every goal counts in this Constellation Cup.”

Diamonds coach Stacey Marinkovich acknowledged that New Zealand’s quick counter-attack repeatedly exposed their circle defenders.

“There was times when New Zealand were getting some good fast breaks in transition so when they did pick up the ball they were down there pretty quick which puts a lot of pressure on our circle defenders.”

For the Silver Ferns, the challenge now is translating that opening performance into a commanding 2-0 series lead before the rivalry shifts across the Tasman for the final two matches.

While acknowledging there was “[a] really good first hit out, obviously with a little bit of nerves with a big anticipation of this game,” Burger and her team know the pressure only increases from here.

The two sides meet again on Wednesday at 7:30pm at Wolfbrook Arena in Christchurch.
