Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve have now co-starred in two films in three years. There was 2024\u2019s A Different Man<\/a>, directed by Aaron Schimberg, and this year\u2019s Fjord<\/a>, the Palme d\u2019Or-winning film from director Christian Mungiu. Perhaps the two will continue to work together in the future, but as Reinsve tells The A.V. Club, the fact that they had previously worked together was not necessarily something Mungiu wanted. \u201cI think actually Christian was a little bit skeptical of pairing us for this movie,\u201d Reinsve says, with \u201cFjord being so different from A Different Man.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Says the actor, \u201cHe was scared that people would have that movie in their heads watching Fjord. But the characters look so different, they are so different, the acting style is completely different. Once Christian took me in, and we went through the script, and I really connected to that character of Lisbet, I think we all got a sense that this will be something completely different.\u201d Still, \u201cit was really nice to have that trust in the base of starting working together, because it was a really different way of working that I\u2019ve ever worked before, and I think also for Sebastian.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

As Reinsve points out, the dark, off-beat comedy of A Different Man is certainly quite different from the stiller tone of Fjord. \u201cA Different Man is very theatrical,\u201d reflects Reinsve. \u201cYou know how to navigate or push the scene in a way, as an actor, with your emotions, to get to a point of view, or to lead the movie to somewhere. Or you want the audience to feel a certain way, you want the person\u2019s audience to love the couple, and to really believe they fall in love, and things like that.\u201d On the other hand, in Fjord, Mungiu\u2019s \u201cideology is really to remove as much manipulation as he can,\u201d she says. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t use music to be your emotion. He doesn\u2019t use the actor\u2019s emotions to lead your emotion as an audience. He really strips it away. And I\u2019ve never played a character that was so quiet, so still, and so contained as Lisbet, but was going through so much. It was really difficult, not wanting to push her in any direction but being really open and to not judge her, and judge her intentions in any scene.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve have now co-starred in two films in three years.
