{"id":635577,"date":"2026-10-19T19:56:07","date_gmt":"2026-10-19T19:56:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/635577\/"},"modified":"2026-10-19T19:56:07","modified_gmt":"2026-10-19T19:56:07","slug":"reactos-reaches-major-milestone-with-ntfs-install-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/635577\/","title":{"rendered":"ReactOS reaches major milestone with NTFS install support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Open source Windows alternative <a href=\"https:\/\/reactos.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ReactOS<\/a> has reached a major milestone: The operating system can now be installed directly onto an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NTFS\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NT Files System<\/a> drive partition. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoronix.com\/news\/ReactOS-NTFS-Driver\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">As reported by Phoronix<\/a>, the move to NTFS clears a long-standing hurdle for the project and brings it one step closer to finally reaching beta.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this latest announcement, ReactOS required users to keep a FAT32 partition for installations. A proprietary Microsoft-developed filesystem, NTFS can trace its roots back through the Windows NT family lineage <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Windows_NT_3.1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">starting in 1993<\/a> with Windows NT 3.1. The variant introduced with Windows XP in 2001 remains the standard used by most Windows systems today. With ReactOS\u2019s stated goal of reaching <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Binary-code_compatibility\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">binary compatibility<\/a> with Windows Server 2003, being confined to FAT32 partitions was a practical barrier to clear on the way to reproducing the Windows environment.<\/p>\n<p>However, users looking to hop off the Windows train shouldn\u2019t be grabbing their bags just yet. ReactOS wrote that the new driver still \u201clacks caching (which causes inferior performance), journaling and security support.\u201d So while the new driver is here, even the most intrepid of OS tinkerers should tread carefully.
