They’ve long known it can help boost gym gains, but could creatine offer brain benefits, too?

Creatine is a naturally occurring compound made from amino acids that helps supply energy to cells. It plays a key role in producing ATP, the body’s primary energy currency — which is especially useful for short bursts of high-intensity activity like weightlifting and sprinting.

The body produces creatine naturally, but supplementation has become increasingly popular as thousands of brands enter the market. Some popular creatine formulas are available for as little as $25 on Amazon. But the relatively affordable price point isn’t the biggest selling point for users.

Many researchers are also exploring whether creatine’s benefits extend beyond physical benefits. Several recent studies have shown that it can also help with cognitive function in older adults. And some older research indicated it might even help with depression treatment.

In a double-blind study, researchers examined whether adding creatine to the antidepressant escitalopram could improve treatment outcomes in 52 women. The results were impressive: 52% of women receiving creatine achieved remission, compared with 25.9% of those receiving a placebo alongside escitalopram.

Of course, more research is needed to confirm creatine’s role in depression treatment. Still, given its popularity and the fact that it’s generally well-tolerated, many users believe it’s potential benefits are worth considering.
