Lily Allen<\/a> says she once felt drawn to the tradwife movement. In an interview with The Times<\/a> published Monday, she looked back on her marriages and said that she used to believe in \u201cthis myth someone\u2019s going to pick you up and make everything OK. I haven\u2019t seen much evidence of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Allen connected her desire to uphold conventional gender roles in her previous marriages to her complicated relationship with her parents, film producer Alison Owen and actor Keith Allen, who she once described to The Guardian<\/a> as not being \u201cparticularly good at parenting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up feeling that I was a vehicle for male pleasure,\u201d she said. \u201cI never really considered my own needs. My priority has been to make sure I don\u2019t get rejected or abandoned. Therefore, I\u2019m prioritising my partner\u2019s enjoyment because the first thing I\u2019m protecting is my safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

The singer shares two children \u2014\u00a0Ethel, 14, and Marnie, 13 \u2014 with her ex-husband Sam Cooper, whom she married in 2011 (they divorced in 2018). Allen later married Stranger Things actor David Harbour in 2020, and they separated last February. Their turbulent relationship was chronicled in the singer\u2019s musical roman \u00e0 clef West End Girl<\/a> last year, where she described an unnamed husband\u2019s infidelity in tortuous detail.<\/p>\n

Allen told The Times that the success of West End Girl and its accompanying tour has helped her become more autonomous, giving her \u201ca sense of agency and accomplishment.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t need to be taken care of any more,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s definitely a sense of liberation in that. There\u2019s always going to be a part of me that wants a happy ending \u2014 but also, not really. I\u2019m starting to see through that.\u201d<\/p>\n
