Powell is said to have counted every brick on the façade of the Kutu Math in Bhaktapur, or the stones in the foundations of Lo Manthang chortens before painting them.

The paintings have an almost photographic accuracy, which is why it is surprising to learn that most of his paintings were not done in situ, but back in the studio based on pencil sketches, photographs and notes he took of the site.

Powell’s prints were sold in limited edition, and many of the originals are with collectors all over the world. Now, Sophia L Pandé of The Kalā Salon in Kathmandu is curating a retrospective in 2027.

Originally planned for the Kathmandu Triennale in 2020, which had to be postponed because of Covid and Powell’s passing, the much-delayed exhibition will celebrate a talented artist who passionately loved Nepal.

But Powell rarely painted people, focusing instead on structures people built to understand them better. In that sense, his paintings represent a visual melding of architecture and anthropology. They tell stories of traditional buildings and landscapes weathered by rain, wind and time, documenting with even greater accuracy and depth than photographs.

TESTIMONIALS

Ahead of the retrospective, Pandé has come out with Robert Powell Catalogue, 2026, Verisimilitude & Imagination: A Lifetime of Paintings and Drawings. Calling it a catalogue is perhaps an understatement, since the harcover book is a collection of tributes by people who knew Powell well (Niels Gutschow, Niranjan Kunwar, Sangeeta Thapa, Lisa Choegyal, and his wife Lieve Aerts) as well as a ‘magnum opus’ by artist-architect Ross Feller.

Feller spent a week in Koh Samui in Powell’s studio just before he died in 2020, and later had access to dozens of his spiral bound sketchbooks covering 40 years. Feller analyses the pencil sketches, side notes to self, and delves deep into Powell’s mind, peeling away the artist’s technique, style, thought process and even philosophy.

Besides the artistic realism in most of his paintings, Powell also produced imaginary images of built spaces, landscapes, vegetation and terrain. As Pandé writes in the catalogue, he took ‘aspects and designs, objects and patterns and outlines of things he had seen that fascinated him, recording them in his journals and then painstakingly reworking them into iterations that are surreal and dreamlike, sometimes floating in space’.

Pandé argues that Powell’s works represent authenticity, not orientalism because ‘he does not burnish or ornament, he documents what he observes’. They can be painted goats, details of the wall at Pashupati (left), bicycles stacked with red radish, a brick kiln in Bhaktapur, or the blood-red cliffs of Drakmar.

There are even paintings of paintings, like the room in Kutu Math which was part of a series commissioned by his Austrian architect friend Götz Hagmüller who lived in that 280-year-old restored courtyard in Bhaktapur.

The Robert Powell Painting Retrospective promises to be a landmark event, the most important since his Earth Door, Sky Door, Paintings of Mustang show in 1999 at the Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian in Washington DC.

Verisimilitude & Imagination: A Lifetime of Paintings and Drawings

Robert Powell at The Kala Salon

Edited by Sophis L Pande

The Kala Salon Foundation, 2026

ISBN: 978-9905-008-32-8

Australian artist Robert Powell left a prodigious body of work across Asia that spanned Swat Valley to Angkor…

[31
442,498,499,500,501,156,312399,312400,312397,312398,312402,312401,111,139,69
post-637063","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-arts-and-design","tag-arts","tag-arts-and-design","tag-artsanddesign","tag-artsdesign","tag-design","tag-entertainment","tag-nepal-business","tag-nepal-culture","tag-nepal-news","tag-nepal-politics","tag-nepal-society","tag-nepal-travel","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz
["GET
