(Photo courtesy of CCGS Henry Larsen\/Transportation Safety Board of Canada)<\/p>\n<p class=\"author custom\">By Nunatsiaq News<\/p>\n<p>An overloaded sealift barge was a central factor in a 2023 incident in which a <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/one-person-treated-for-minor-injuries-in-iqaluit-sealift-incident-city-says\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">worker was injured<\/a> and 23 sea cans fell into Frobisher Bay.<\/p>\n<p>The Transportation Safety Board of Canada released its report into the Oct. 27, 2023, spill that occurred while the NEAS ship Sivumut was unloading cargo near Iqaluit.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators found that the barge on which workers were unloading freight was \u201coverloaded\u201d and \u201coperating beyond its stability limits,\u201d a news release said, leading to a capsize.<\/p>\n<p>The injured worker recovered in hospital, and a recovery of the lost sea cans began soon after.<\/p>\n<p>Six sea cans, which were loaded with products including porcelain toilets, were <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/6-sealift-containers-from-2023-iqaluit-spill-still-underwater\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">still underwater<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>The Transportation Safety Board is an independent agency that investigates air, sea, land and rail occurrences. TSB reports include recommendations to improve the safety of transportation in Canada.
