Omega-3s offer several potential benefits on their own, including supporting healthy blood pressure, lowering triglycerides, and promoting joint and eye health.

But certain nutrients, including vitamin D, vitamin E, and magnesium, may complement omega-3s and offer additional health benefits. Here’s what to know about which supplements pair well with omega-3s and whether combining them is worth trying.

1. Vitamin E

Omega-3 fatty acids are sensitive to oxidation, which can make them unstable, especially during digestion.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant, so pairing it with omega-3 can help protect omega-3 from oxidative damage as the fats are digested, so omega-3 can do its job without losing its intended function.

Some studies also suggest that combining both omega-3 and vitamin E may offer additional benefits for supporting healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels. However, evidence is limited, and more research is needed to understand how much extra benefit the combination provides.

2. Vitamin D

Both omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D can help boost immune health. Because they overlap, taking both supplements together may offer extra benefits for boosting immunity and reducing inflammation.

One study reported that taking vitamin D and omega-3 supplements together reduced inflammation more than taking either alone, but more research is needed to confirm this.

Certain fish oil supplements, like cod liver oil, provide lower doses of vitamin D, vitamin A, and omega-3, with effects comparable to higher doses of individual supplements, so they may carry a lower risk of side effects.

3. Magnesium

People with high blood pressure may benefit from pairing magnesium with omega-3, as both supplements help lower blood pressure.

Omega-3 fatty acids help support healthy blood vessel function and improve blood flow. Magnesium, on the other hand, helps relax blood vessels and further lower blood pressure.

However, while combining both supplements may improve blood pressure, studies have not established that taking them together provides greater benefits than taking either nutrient on its own.

Does Taking Omega-3 Alone Limit Its Benefits?

Omega-3 works well on its own with or without other supplements. There is currently no evidence that omega-3 supplements alone are less effective for heart health, immune function, or inflammation than taking them with other supplements.

That said, some supplement pairings may offer additional support, but they aren’t necessary to benefit from omega-3 on its own.

Safety Considerations

It’s likely safe to combine omega-3 fatty acids with vitamin D, E, and Magnesium. However, evidence for combining omega-3 with other supplements is limited, and fewer studies have confirmed safety.

Be mindful of doses when combining supplements to avoid toxicity. If you take prescription medications, have a health condition, are pregnant, and want to combine omega-3 with other supplements, talk to your health provider first before starting any new combination.

Read the original article on Health

Medically reviewed by Patricia Mikula, PharmD Credit: Yulia Reznikov / Getty Images Why this matters: Omega-3 supplements support…

[36
134,111,139,556,69
post-645671","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nutrition","tag-health","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nutrition","tag-nz
["GET
