State Farm estimates that U.S. drivers filed 1.7 million animal collision claims between July 2024 and June 2025, according to its latest data<\/a>. Deer accounted for more than 1.1 million of them. And the period we\u2019re entering is the riskiest: October, November and December together account for about 650,000 incidents, or 41% of all animal collision claims.<\/p>\n The odds vary a lot by state. In West Virginia, a driver\u2019s odds of an animal collision are 1 in 40, followed by Montana (1 in 53), Wisconsin (1 in 58), Michigan (1 in 61) and Pennsylvania (1 in 62). Nationally, the odds are 1 in 139.<\/p>\n The reflex most drivers have<\/p>\n When a deer jumps out, the instinct is to yank the wheel to avoid it. State Farm\u2019s advice is the opposite: \u201cDon\u2019t swerve.\u201d Brake firmly and stay in your lane, the insurer says, because many serious crashes happen when drivers swerve, into oncoming traffic, a tree or a ditch.<\/p>\n It feels wrong, but the logic is simple: a collision with a deer is usually less dangerous for the people in the car than leaving the road or hitting another vehicle.<\/p>\n Caught on camera<\/p>\n In Oakland County, Michigan, a police dashcam once filmed exactly this kind of scene: several deer ran in front of a car, which braked suddenly. One deer jumped over the car, and a buck landed on its rear windshield before running off, KIRO 7 reported<\/a>. Deputies said no one appeared to be hurt. Their reminder: \u201cyou have to always be in control of your car and not distracted by anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n \ufeff<\/p>\n How to lower the risk<\/p>\n State Farm\u2019s tips:<\/p>\n Slow down, and drive at a speed that lets you stop within the range of your headlights. If you hit a deer<\/p>\n Move to a safe spot and turn on your hazard lights. Call the police if the animal is blocking traffic. Stay away from the injured animal and don\u2019t try to move it. Take photos, check your car for leaks, loose parts or broken lights before driving, and contact your insurer: comprehensive coverage typically pays for animal collision repairs after the deductible. Wildlife can surprise us at home too, like the cheetah that fell asleep against a photographer<\/a>.<\/p>\n The limit<\/p>\n \u201cDon\u2019t swerve\u201d is general advice for deer, not an absolute rule for every situation: a much larger animal, or an obstacle you can safely avoid, is a different case. What doesn\u2019t change is the priority: stay in control of your car.
