The horse has Melbourne Cup winning pedigree, sired by 2009 champion Shocking.

A New Zealand owned and trained horse hasn’t won the Melbourne Cup since Ethereal in 2001, while the last NZ-bred horse to claim top honours was Verry Elleegant (2021).

The Melbourne Cup is seen during Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington Racecourse (Source: Getty)

How is the prize money divided?

The field battles it out for more than A$10 million (NZ$12.75m) in prize money, making it the world’s richest handicap race.

The winning horse’s connection receives a A$4.5 million first prize, with the rest of the payouts distributed as follows: 2nd: A$1.1 million, 3rd: A$560,000, 4th: A$360,000, 5th: A$240,000, 6th-12th: A$160,000, 13-24th: A$100,000.

How’s the weather looking?

The forecast in Melbourne is for fine and mildly cloudy conditions on race day, with only a slight chance of a light morning shower and an expected high of 18C.

But rain and thunderstorms expected overnight on Monday mean the track will likely be soft.

2026 Melbourne Cup field 2026 (including barrier draw & TAB odds)

1.
