An Oamaru boy who \u2018\u2018loves to ski\u2019\u2019 is facing a long recovery and uncertain future after breaking his back and both legs in a skiing fall on Mount Ruapehu.<\/p>\n

Family friends are now rallying around Charlie Lane and his mother, Emily Lane, while the teenager faces surgery and an unknown length of stay in an unfamiliar North Island city.<\/p>\n

The 13-year-old broke both his legs and back in an almost 8m fall and doctors estimated he\u00a0would be in a wheelchair for at least a year.<\/p>\n

Family friend Julianne Morris, of \u0100whitu in Auckland, said Charlie\u2019s passion was skiing, and it was sad he was injured doing something he loved so much.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018He loves to ski,\u2019\u2019 Ms Morris said.<\/p>\n

After the accident, Charlie was intiially taken to Rotorua Hospital but had since been taken to Waikato Hospital in Hamilton.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Emily and Charlie are not from Waikato and they don\u2019t know a lot of people from around there \u2014 it\u2019s such a terrible, terrible, time and it’s made harder being so far from home.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Ms Morris has set up a Givealittle page<\/a> to help the family.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018Emily is a single mum and she doesn’t have anybody else to help her . . . \u00a0and she never takes help from anybody.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018She is the most genuine and most honest person I’ve ever met.”<\/p>\n

Ms Lane recently bought her first home in Oamaru and they were in the North Island for a \u2018\u2018tiki tour\u2019\u2019 when Charlie was injured.<\/p>\n

Givealittle funds would go towards supporting the Lane\u2019s travel costs, household bills, daily expenses while far from home, and ongoing support such as making the home suitable for wheelchair use once back in Oamaru.<\/p>\n
