The City of St. John’s is asking residents \u2014 but not yet ordering them \u2014 to reduce water consumption amid a period of low precipitation.<\/p>\n
In a news release sent Wednesday morning, city spokesperson Jackie O’Brien said levels in the city’s drinking water supply remain low and have not recovered.<\/p>\n
“By using less water and making conservation a part of our daily routine, we can help reduce the strain on our water sources,” she wrote.<\/p>\n
The city is asking residents, as well as anyone who lives or works in a building connected to the city’s water supply, to take measures such as:<\/p>\n
Taking shorter showersTurning off the tap while brushing your teeth or shavingOnly using dishwashers or washing machines when they are fullFixing any leaking taps or toilets<\/p>\n
The province saw drought conditions over the summer<\/a> with 40 water monitoring stations showing showing below-normal levels and 10 recording all-time lows.<\/p>\n Wells ran dry in many places around the province, including the Goulds neighbourhood<\/a> of St. John’s. <\/p>\n Torbay issued an urgent plea for residents to conserve water in late September, as the water levels were just 40 inches above the in-take pipe for North Pond.<\/p>\n Other communities, such as Hughes Brook and Sunnyside, saw their taps run dry this summer amid hot and dry conditions.<\/p>\n Download our\u00a0free CBC News app<\/a>\u00a0to sign up for push alerts for CBC Newfoundland and Labrador.
