They have brand names like Dryv, Mojo, and LF*GO!, and market themselves as the ultimate way to enhance your energy, focus, and/or general motivation for everything.

Yes, some performance pouches contain nicotine, but many lean on caffeine or blends of buzzy ingredients to fuel their advertised effects. And I get why they’re popular: They’re fast-acting, hands-free, and portable. (Many even come in Zyn-like, hockey-puck-shaped canisters.)

As a registered dietitian, I’m fielding more questions from my clients about performance pouches. Many people are curious about taking them, especially on days they don’t want a coffee or an energy drink.

I’m a straight-up espresso kind of guy who uses caffeine as a performance tool, so I’m curious about pouches, too, but also a little skeptical. So I decided to conduct my own test of some of the most popular performance pouches on the market.

The results flat-out surprised me.

How I Tested Performance Pouches

I’M A DIETITIAN. I have standards. I narrowed my sample of performance pouches to those that satisfied three key criteria.

No Nicotine

Nicotine increases heart rate and blood pressure. If you combine that elevated state with intense exercise, you could face potentially dangerous effects (heart issues, passing out). Plus, nicotine is addictive and hooks you in fast. Right now, there’s no quality research around nicotine and exercise performance.

Label Transparency

That means that the amounts of each ingredient are listed clearly on the label, not hiding behind a “proprietary blend.” Trademarked ingredients are fine only when the amount is listed. If you can’t clearly read what you’re taking you should be skeptical about if that pouch can even perform. Ideally, like all supplements, you also want the product to carry a third-party testing seal. This independent certification process ensures that what’s listed on the ingredients panel is actually in the product itself and that the supplement is free of banned substances. Trusted certifiers: NSF, USP, and Informed Choice. Look for their seals of approval. Many products don’t have one.

Caffeine Levels

Everybody’s different when it comes to how much caffeine they can tolerate. But, in general, it’s good idea to keep your daily intake capped at 400 milligrams (and ideally lower). Anything over that and your sleep can take a hit. So if you’re also drinking coffee, tea, and/or energy drinks during your day, pay special attention to how much caffeine is in your pouches.

After collecting pouches that hit these qualifications (and, believe me, there are many that don’t), I spent a few weeks taking them. During training days (strength training, interval running, long runs), I took pouches that contained caffeine. During workdays, I tried the non-caffeinated “nootropic” pouches.

I took each pouch 10 to 20 minutes before doing the activity and took notes in my training log, with a spot-check from my Whoop. I logged how hard the same work felt, set or split quality, time to fatigue, onset and landing, GI comfort, and any sleep payback.

The Best Pouches

These popular packets contain 100 mg of caffeine from green coffee (basically coffee beans that haven’t been roasted), plus a bunch of other ingredients like L-theanine, B3, B6, B12, and chromium. The buzz kicked in after roughly 20 minutes and I felt a steady sense of alertness through both a heavy lifting day and a separate long run in the Arizona heat.

The flavors were pretty elite and tasted great past the 30-minute mark. No crash. No sleep or GI issues. Wip doesn’t have third-party certification, but the ingredients amounts are clearly listed. Putting on my dietitian hat, the B vitamins won’t do much for you, and the chromium won’t affect same-day performance, but overall, Wip delivers.

Nectr pairs a light 30mg caffeine dose with 63 mg citicoline, a compound linked to cognitive performance, for a gentle, steady lift. I felt the subtle effects in about 15 minutes and the flavor flattened after about 25 minutes. I didn’t experience the jitters and there wasn’t a crash later in the day, which I’d expected given the low caffeine dosage.

Did the citicoline have an effect? Who knows? While there’s some promising and emerging research around citicoline supplementation and the brain, it’s far too early to tell if there’s a direct relationship between taking the compound and feeling like Professor X. No third-party testing on this one, either. I’d say these are best deployed when you need gentle nudge on easy days or light work, not for intense training or tasks that require serious concentration.

The pouches in these white cans contain about 80 mg of caffeine per pouch, plus taurine, glucuronolactone, and B-vitamins. I tested them during a short lifting session and an easy run, during which they activated in 15 minutes and delivered a sustained feeling of energy. That said, the flavor broke after about 20 minutes.

The caffeine content (roughly the amount that’s in a cup of coffee) didn’t jack me up or cause GI distress. I wasn’t getting much from the taurine, though, probably because studies on taurine and performance show an effect at dosages of 1 to 2 g, which is far above typical levels found in pouches. No third-party testing for this one.

Related Stories

Dezi Abeyta, RDN, is a Men’s Health Nutrition Adviser, author of Lose Your Gut Guide, and founder of Foodtalk Nutrition LLC.

PERFORMANCE POUCHES ARE everywhere right now.
