{"id":68595,"date":"2025-10-09T21:09:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T21:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/68595\/"},"modified":"2025-10-09T21:09:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T21:09:07","slug":"boggle-and-pictionary-tv-games-coming-to-netflix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/68595\/","title":{"rendered":"Boggle and Pictionary TV games coming to Netflix"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Netflix on Wednesday night unveiled its first games for the TV, as the Los Gatos streamer aims to gain a bigger share of the video game market. <\/p>\n<p>The five games \u2014 which include versions of Boggle and Pictionary \u2014 are meant to be played on a TV in the same room with family and friends using their phones as controllers and are included in a regular Netflix subscription.<\/p>\n<p>Other titles include LEGO Party!, Tetris Time Warp and social deduction game Party Crashers: Fool Your Friends. The company plans to roll out the games in the U.S. before the holidays. <\/p>\n<p>Netflix co-Chief Executive Greg Peters announced the TV games slate at a Bloomberg Screentime media conference in Hollywood on Wednesday, citing the burgeoning market for gaming.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers spend $140 billion a year on gaming, an amount that excludes Russian and Chinese markets and advertising revenue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think it\u2019s a real opportunity for us to try and earn a percentage of that over a period of time,\u201d Peters said at the event. <\/p>\n<p>Netflix announced its plans to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2022-10-24\/lat-et-ct-netfllix-games\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expand into mobile gaming<\/a> in 2021, acquiring <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2022-03-02\/netflix-to-acquire-mobile-game-developer-next-games\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">several game developers<\/a>, including Glendale-based Night School Studios over time. The company started out in mobile games and has been testing games for the TV since 2023. <\/p>\n<p>This would be the first significant slate of TV games for Netflix, meant to be played from one to eight players in the same room on their TV.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to give subscribers more reasons to keep their subscriptions, Netflix has licensed and built mobile games, some of them based on such popular franchises as \u201c<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2024-05-30\/why-netflix-is-featuring-its-reality-stars-in-games\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Too Hot to Handle<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2024-12-24\/squid-game-netflix-season-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Squid Game<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>But so far the efforts have been mixed.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the gaming division was hit with <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/articles\/netflix-shutters-aaa-game-studio-led-by-overwatch-and-halo-vets\/1100-6527313\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">layoffs<\/a>.
