{"id":69130,"date":"2025-10-10T03:05:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T03:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/69130\/"},"modified":"2025-10-10T03:05:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T03:05:14","slug":"what-the-pacific-blob-la-nina-means-for-winter-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/69130\/","title":{"rendered":"What the Pacific \u2018blob\u2019 + La Ni\u00f1a means for winter in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidb4wo000x26p66mwzayzk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A marine heat wave spanning much of the North Pacific Ocean is already influencing the weather in North America and is poised to make its mark on winter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidz14n00013b6nvgx2uaff@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The unusually warm ocean water, coined \u201cthe blob\u201d due to how it appears on weather maps, has brought milder and more humid air to the West Coast in recent weeks, according to Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z00043b6odu59zzth@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This has led to unusual thunderstorms in coastal California and may be helping to limit the severity of the late summer and early fall wildfire season, at least for now.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z00053b6o6dy2pq3h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What is clear to meteorologists is that the Pacific heat wave may be a significant player in influencing late fall and winter weather patterns across large parts of the Northern Hemisphere.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z00063b6opf36qmtx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But long-range forecasters have another global weather pattern to consider this winter: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/27\/weather\/la-nina-winter-forecast-climate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">La Ni\u00f1a has arrived<\/a>, just announced Thursday morning by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z00073b6o398px2fk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The big question mark for winter in the United States\ufeff is what the extreme ocean heat, with water temperatures running as much as 9 degrees Fahrenheit above average for this time of year, will do to the jet stream.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z00083b6o57k9gxvq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think it clearly already is affecting the weather,\u201d Swain said of the expansive Pacific marine heat wave. He called its intensity \u201cphenomenal, really remarkable,\u201c and noted it has been responsible for record warm temperatures over the summer in South Korea, Japan and other areas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z00093b6o5gbp1jgy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is probably going to result in some shifts in the Pacific storm track late this fall and winter,\u201d Swain said. To Swain and other experts, this event is larger than previous Pacific blob heat waves that were more limited in geographic scope.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z000a3b6o24md3h7t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It is, based on experts\u2019 descriptions of it, the blob to end all blobs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z000b3b6of9nm368v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The jet stream, which is a band of strong winds in the upper atmosphere, steers and energizes storms as they move from west to east across the Pacific and across North America. Its strength comes from the extreme difference between the tropics (very warm) and the Arctic (very cold).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z000c3b6of6k23mez@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The warm blob diminishes that difference and takes some of the wind out of the jet stream\u2019s sails, according to Swain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z000d3b6oazdtcf4l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What does that mean for US weather? It could increase the amount of moisture in storms, making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/09\/weather\/what-is-an-atmospheric-river-xpn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">atmospheric rivers<\/a> more prolific rain and snow producers, while also slowing the winds in the jet stream somewhat,  which in turn means slower-moving storms, Swain said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-2186335220.jpg\" alt=\"Firefighters block off a flooded road on November 22, 2024, in Windsor, California, after a powerful atmospheric river brought heavy rain and wind to the San Francisco Bay Area.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3162\" width=\"4712\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z000e3b6omqhcsx2a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The setup across the Pacific also could give the jet stream a bit of a shove to the north, resulting in a wetter than average winter in the Pacific Northwest, Swain said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z000f3b6ocgr0hegx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The nascent La Ni\u00f1a in the tropical Pacific, which features cooler than normal water along the equator, also needs to be factored into the winter forecast, experts told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z000g3b6oqc344sqv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Typically, seasonal climate forecasters put more weight on conditions in the tropical Pacific than conditions farther north, but Swain said the widespread heat wave occurring to the north will interact with the La Ni\u00f1a in ways that need to be taken into consideration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z000h3b6ohbosgmpi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The warm Pacific, coupled with warmer than average Atlantic water, too, could result in a mild winter for the Lower 48 states, at least to start with, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgidbx9z000i3b6oa7w5vvww@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe global oceans are super, super warm right now, so that\u2019s just going to favor  \u2026 some of that warmth,\u201d Swain said.
