The leader of a secretive religious group has announced he\u2019s stepping back from his role, citing a \u201ctough year\u201d and \u201cconstant pressure”.<\/p>\n
Wayne Dean, who oversees a church commonly referred to as the Two By Twos or The Truth – though it has no official name – has been leading its New Zealand branch for the past three years. Originally from Western Australia, Dean is now returning home for what he describes as \u201can extended break”.<\/p>\n
The church is currently under investigation by New Zealand police for alleged sexual offending.<\/p>\n
In a letter emailed to the group\u2019s roughly 2500 members, Dean wrote: \u201cConstant pressure or force on anything eventually has an effect. It brings me no pleasure to have to say that again I feel the need for a break. This has not come at a good time.\u201d<\/p>\n
He explained that while he was scheduled to attend conventions in Western Australia – just as he did last year – these events, though meaningful, don\u2019t offer the rest he needs.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs wonderful as conventions are for us, they are not a break.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dean said the decision to return to Australia felt like the wisest move, allowing him to spend time with siblings and close friends in a familiar setting.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis way I can take the time needed to see the way forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also expressed gratitude for his time in New Zealand.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been glad for every field I have been in and getting to know you. I\u2019m sorry there are still some of you that I haven\u2019t met yet. But we are thankful for the same Spirit that unites us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tim Hamilton will take over as overseer in New Zealand, while Australian overseer Trevor Joll is expected to travel to New Zealand next month for conventions – large annual gatherings that span several days and include preaching, personal testimonies, fellowship, and worship.<\/p>\n
