And it wasn\u2019t just shocking for the fans \u2013 it was also devastating for Sally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cMy agent called me one Friday night last year,\u201d recalls Sally. \u201cShe said, \u2018You probably know what this is about,\u2019 and I said, \u2018No,\u2019 as I live quite squarely in the present. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThen she told me and I went hot, then cold. I was home alone too because my boyfriend Dan had gone out. So I spent the next few hours just pacing, walking from wall to wall in every room of our house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI cried and tried to calm myself, as it was just such a surreal feeling. Not that I ever thought I was invincible, but it was still awful. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cMy brain spiralled into \u2018What will I do for money? What work am I even capable of doing?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Sally with her beloved partner Dan. Photo \/ NZ Woman&#8217;s Weekly<\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">Once the news had sunk in and Dan had come home, Sally texted her friend Hannah, who\u2019s a script supervisor on the show, and Jess Sayer, who plays Maeve, her onscreen wife. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI told them, \u2018FYI, this thing had happened,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cI didn\u2019t yet have any words I could say out loud.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOver that weekend, I also spoke to my family, the producers and the head of writing. Everyone was genuinely gutted and so supportive.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">Sally, 40, also says that her nearest and dearest, including beloved partner Dan, heaved a collective sigh of relief. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe job took so much from me over the years,\u201d she reveals candidly. \u201cOh, my God, I loved it and I\u2019m so utterly appreciative for all it gave me, but it took so much. I missed momentous occasions and I suffered clinical burnout a couple of times. Yes, it was my choice to stay as long as I did, but the role took its toll.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">With Nicole\u2019s exit part of last year\u2019s Christmas cliffhanger, leaving the show also made for a dramatic change to Sally\u2019s life. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">So to recalibrate, she took a much-needed breather. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhen I wrapped, I spent some time with wh\u0101nau in my hometown of Lower Hutt and with Dan, who\u2019s my rock, plus this guy,\u201d says Sally, drawing Jimi, her \u201cother man\u201d, closer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">Jimi is Sally\u2019s 6-year-old Staffy, who\u2019s wearing an elegant button-front sleeveless cardigan for the Weekly\u2019s visit. Photo \/ NZ Woman&#8217;s Weekly<\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cNow I\u2019m home most days, Jimi Houndrix here is getting lots of walks,\u201d laughs Sally. \u201cHe\u2019s not going to day care any more either, so he\u2019s stuck to me like Velcro instead!\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">But Sally says she wasn\u2019t blindsided by her axing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">She\u2019s been a professional actor since she was 15, including a year on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/entertainment\/power-rangers-series-leaving-new-zealand-after-being-produced-here-for-more-than-20-years\/OSBUL6UWERGX5GP7T5ZPQPO2HQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/entertainment\/power-rangers-series-leaving-new-zealand-after-being-produced-here-for-more-than-20-years\/OSBUL6UWERGX5GP7T5ZPQPO2HQ\/\">Power Rangers<\/a> at 17, so she knows how precarious showbiz can be. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cShortland Street has been through so much change lately,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s gone from five days a week to three. Other cast and crew members have been let go, so it wasn\u2019t just Nicole who was written out.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">Sally says her heart goes out to her colleagues, whose fates continue to hang in the balance \u2013 even though the iconic soap will survive for at least one more year in its new pared-down format.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">She knows she had a good run. Arriving in Ferndale aged 24 \u2013 her contract was meant to run for just three months \u2013 Sally never dreamed Nicole would survive as long as she did. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">Over the course of more than 15 years, Sally would make some of her closest friends and experience some of her happiest days. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019re like a family out there, partly because we spend more time on set than we do with our actual families,\u201d explains Sally. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">And, of course, there have also been excruciating lows. Undoubtedly, the most painful of them all was when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/pua-magasiva-death-coroner-findings-reveals-tragic-final-hours-tv-star-battled-childhood-demons\/I65A46JIAZGF3NHGMV5XNHW5XI\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/pua-magasiva-death-coroner-findings-reveals-tragic-final-hours-tv-star-battled-childhood-demons\/I65A46JIAZGF3NHGMV5XNHW5XI\/\">Pua Magasiva<\/a>, Sally\u2019s onscreen husband and friend, took his own life six years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cPua and I first met on Power Rangers in 2002,\u201d she remembers. \u201cHe was so sweet and protective. I was 17 and all the other actors were international, so he and I had this camaraderie as Kiwis. Because I was the only female Ranger that season and the youngest, he became like a brother. <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"The most painful of lows for Sally was Pua Magasiva's death. He played his brother Robbie Magasiva\u2019s cousin when my character was with Robbie\u2019s Dr Maxwell Avia. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWorking with them was magic \u2013 then Vinnie and Nicole fell in love. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cFor a soap opera, they were together such a long time, as best mates, then as husband and wife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat relationship onscreen was so beautifully written. Starting as friends with lots of banter, they began a beautiful romantic relationship.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">But she says Pua used to drive her wild on the show. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019ll be honest, we worked in very different ways,\u201d she explains. \u201cI\u2019d spend at least one full day each weekend learning my scenes because I had to know my lines before entering the building. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHappy-go-lucky Pua would just wing it, which is a great energy to bring, but I could be grumpy about it sometimes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhen I think of the times he\u2019d arrive not knowing his lines, which makes an anxious person so anxious, then to realise the demons he was fighting,\u201d Sally says, before taking a deep breath as she reflects on the tragic loss of her friend, her heart clearly still broken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">Mindful of the myriad complexities surrounding mental health issues, she\u2019s been open about her own struggles with anxiety and depression. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019ve been to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/mental-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/mental-health\/\">counsellors and therapists<\/a> \u2013 Pua comes up often,\u201d she shares. \u201cMaybe I\u2019ll never be settled about it because I\u2019m still so angry with him. I struggle with depression and anxiety, plus I\u2019ve had times when I\u2019ve not wanted to be present. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI get it. I know suicide isn\u2019t rational, but when you see the damage it does to the family and friends left behind&#8230;\u201d says Sally, before having to take a moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">When the conversation turns to the importance of striving for emotional wellbeing, Sally explains even though she\u2019s technically taking time out, she doesn\u2019t like to be idle. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI really need daily accomplishments to keep me balanced,\u201d she says. \u201cPart of my routine since I left Shorty is to make sure I have a list and I tick things off. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBecause I\u2019m someone who can start to fold the washing, then make toast halfway through. Then the dog looks like he needs a cuddle \u2013 so a schedule keeps me in line!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">To that end, Sally has a wall planner broken down into achievements. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThose things could be anything from applying for a job, working out or walking the dog,\u201d she tells. \u201cThere\u2019s self-care, like taking myself to the beach and reading a book or art, which I find very calming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Sally\u2019s been quietly carving out a niche by doing part-time bookwork from home. Photo \/ Robert Trathen<\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">Sally laughs a little shyly when she admits she\u2019s also written her first CV and has been navigating the complexity of creating the perfect cover letter that mines 15 years of experience on a soap opera for transferable skills. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cActing work comes in different ways, so you can\u2019t control that,\u201d she reflects, quickly pointing out she\u2019s well aware how many others will relate. \u201cI\u2019ve applied for so many \u2018proper\u2019 jobs, from dishwasher to dental assistant. The job search thing is hard on the soul. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere are so many people in my position, looking for work in a tough market. But I\u2019m really keen to learn and grow. Only I\u2019ll apply for a reception job, then see 987 people have already applied \u2013 and most of the time you don\u2019t even hear back!\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">Which is why she\u2019s grateful to her father for fostering her accountancy skills. She\u2019s been quietly carving out a niche by doing part-time bookwork from home. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAs well as a creative brain, I have a numbers brain with all that financial craft I learned from my dad,\u201d she reveals. \u201cI\u2019m pretty proficient at basic computer software from Microsoft to Xero. I\u2019ve always done my own taxes.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">Looking to the future, beyond finding a job and still being an actor, Sally says she and Dan would like to travel \u2013 although their furry child Jimi needs to be taken into consideration. <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">As someone who thrives on stability, Sally wonders half in jest if she fell into the wrong career. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MFxmLElkspXO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBut you can\u2019t help pursue what makes you happy,\u201d she says. \u201cChange is inevitable and I\u2019m learning to ride the waves as they come.
