{"id":70500,"date":"2025-10-10T18:45:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T18:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/70500\/"},"modified":"2025-10-10T18:45:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T18:45:06","slug":"positive-asbestos-test-closes-busy-auckland-fire-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/70500\/","title":{"rendered":"Positive asbestos test closes busy Auckland fire station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  [&amp;_p]:tit-sub-xl tit-sub-xl md:[&amp;_p]:d-tit-sub-xl md:d-tit-sub-xl mb-[1.3rem]\">One of Auckland&#8217;s busiest fire stations has been closed after dust samples tested positive for asbestos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Fire and Emergency New Zealand Deputy National Commander Megan Stiffler said the result was a consequence of testing at the Pitt Street station, which took place in July. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;This is a result we were not expecting,&#8221; Stiffler said, saying the organisation was &#8220;disappointed&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;The safety and well-being of our firefighters is of the utmost importance to us, and the station has been closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;We have arranged precautionary air monitoring and swab testing around the station.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Stiffler said this testing would take place today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">She said FENZ has &#8220;no reason&#8221; to believe there had been any spread of asbestos beyond the initial rooms since it was removed in September last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">The station was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2023\/04\/20\/nzs-busiest-fire-station-closed-after-asbestos-found\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previously out of action in 2023<\/a> after asbestos was discovered during renovation work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Once used frequently in construction, asbestos can cause disastrous health effects, including lung scarring, asbestosis and cancer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"One of Auckland&#8217;s busiest fire stations has been closed after dust samples tested positive for asbestos.
