{"id":7051,"date":"2025-09-07T01:15:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-07T01:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/7051\/"},"modified":"2025-09-07T01:15:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T01:15:10","slug":"b-c-s-job-market-growth-is-officially-one-of-the-worst-in-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/7051\/","title":{"rendered":"B.C.&#8217;s job market growth is officially one of the worst in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/vancouver\/kwantlen-polytechnic-university-layoffs-drop-international-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">high-profile layoffs<\/a> in Metro Vancouver have hung over the region\u2019s job market in <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/vancouver\/wesgroup-properties-vancouver-layoffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recent weeks<\/a>, and the latest data from Statistics Canada shows that employment numbers in B.C. are not faring much better.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/250905\/dq250905a-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Labour Force Survey for August 2025<\/a>, released on Friday, Sept. 5, shows that B.C. suffered one of the largest employment declines in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>According to StatCan, employment in the province decreased by 16,000 jobs, or 0.5 per cent. It is the second consecutive month of job losses in B.C., with the unemployment rate rising to 6.2 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Canada as a whole lost 66,000 jobs, with the country\u2019s unemployment rate rising to 7.1 per cent last month.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2079527\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2079527\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/canada-jobs-1024x524.jpg\" alt=\"canada jobs\" width=\"1024\" height=\"524\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2079527\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EvangelosG\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were 1.6 million unemployed people in August, an increase of 34,000 from July,\u201d said StatCan in the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who were unemployed in July continued to face difficulties finding work in August. Just 15.2 per cent of those who were unemployed in July had found work in August, lower than the corresponding proportion for the same months from 2017 to 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>B.C. was second among all provinces for the highest recorded employment declines in August. Also in the top three are Ontario, which shed 26,000 jobs, and Alberta, which lost 14,000 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth for B.C., said that he expects job opportunities to recover in September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, B.C.\u2019s total employment decreased by 15,700 (-0.5 per cent) in August, including a decrease of 10,500 in educational services, which is typical in summer months, and is expected to rebound in September,\u201d said Kahlon in a statement on the release of Statistics Canada\u2019s Labour Force Survey. \u201cYear over year, B.C. has gained 26,900 jobs compared to August 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Canada faces strong economic headwinds from the tariff threat in the United States, British Columbia is working to build an economy that can stand on its own two feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2138559\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2138559\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/surrey-cloverdale-hospital-bc-cancer-centre-construction-december-2024-f1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"surrey cloverdale hospital bc cancer centre construction december 2024\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2138559\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">December 2024 construction progress on Fraser Health Authority\u2019s $2.88-billion new Cloverdale Hospital and B.C. (EllisDon)<\/p>\n<p>Kahlon pointed out that the Labour Force Survey show an increase of 11,400 jobs in construction and 5,700 in manufacturing, which aligns with the Government of B.C.\u2019s commitment to investing in key infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>In May, the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/vancouver\/bc-government-infrastructure-projects-act-legislation-expedited-consolidation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">provincial government introduced new legislation aimed at accelerating the construction of major infrastructure projects<\/a>.\u00a0Specific provisions under the new legislation include fast-tracked approvals for schools, hospitals, and other provincially designated projects.<\/p>\n<p>StatCan also highlighted a challenging summer job market for students, noting that the unemployment rate for returning students aged 15 to 24 was 17.9 per cent during the period from May to August. It\u2019s the highest summer unemployment rate since 2009.<\/p>\n<p>In July, Daily Hive <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/vancouver\/bc-jobs-for-students-summer-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">spoke with several B.C. students<\/a> who were left empty-handed after submitting applications for hundreds of jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly two interviews. No offers,\u201d one student shared. \u201cIt\u2019s honestly been demoralizing. You spend time writing a cover letter, tweaking your resume, and then hear nothing.
