The Trump administration has now finalized plans to deliver Argentina a financial lifeline. <\/a>On Thursday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent <\/a>announced that the United States had directly purchased Argentine pesos as part of a $20 billion currency swap with the country\u2019s central bank. <\/p>\n

Bessent has repeatedly insisted that the deal with Argentina and its president, Javier Milei (a close ally of Donald Trump)<\/a>, does not amount to a bailout. But, according to Stephanie Ruhle, \u201cdownplaying it as merely a swap agreement, exchanging pesos for dollars to stabilize their economy\u201d is \u201cnot the full picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe might not be writing a direct $20 billion check to Argentina,\u201d she explained on \u201c11th Hour\u201d<\/a> Thursday evening, \u201cbut we are still taking enormous risk to help out a friend of the president who\u2019s up for re-election in a country that\u2019s in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruhle described the deal as a \u201cmassive loan\u201d on behalf of the U.S. \u2014 and one that comes with a lot of risk. \u201cIf Argentina does default \u2014 and they may \u2014 it is a $20 billion loss for us. The Fed will be left holding a ginormous bag of pesos worth nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The MSNBC host said you could either call the deal \u201ca hidden bailout, or direct bailout,\u201d but that it was undeniably \u201ca huge win for Argentina, its president and the group of U.S. investors Secretary Bessent knows very well, who bet big on Argentina.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruhle told viewers to keep in mind what else is going on in the United States as the administration closes this $20 billion deal. \u201cThis is happening while the U.S. government is shut down, <\/a>thousands of furloughed federal workers are not getting their paychecks <\/a>this week.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo when we hear about \u2018America First,\u2019 <\/a>know this,\u201d she explained. \u201c\u2018America First,\u2019 in this instance, is the investor class. That right there is the full picture.\u201d<\/p>\n
