Chandulal-Mackay said he had been realistic about the challenges associated with challenging a first-term incumbent mayor.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m really happy with the campaign I ran, and, honestly, the nerves throughout the morning have been excruciating,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m relieved to have heard a result. I\u2019m very content.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said he had called Tripe to congratulate him and wanted \u201cto thank everyone for participating in the process\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome big challenges are coming up over the next three years and I will work positively and constructively with Andrew and the other successfully elected councillors.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the general ward, Mike Hos has been elected to the council for the first time.<\/p>\n
Returning councillors are Chandulal-Mackay (7159 votes), Oskam (4985), Kate Joblin (7194), Michael Law (7479), Glenda Brown (5969), Charlotte Melser (6366), Ross Fallen (4934), Rob Vinsen (6869) and Philippa Baker-Hogan (5732). <\/p>\n
Four-term councillors Jenny Duncan<\/a>, Charlie Anderson and Helen Craig<\/a> did not seek re-election.<\/p>\n Julie Herewini (906) and Geoff Hipango (738) won Whanganui\u2019s two M\u0101ori ward seats, with Phil \u201cBear\u201d Reweti (307), Kiritahi Firmin (502) and Hayden Potaka (447) missing out.<\/p>\n It is the first time the M\u0101ori ward<\/a> has been in place in Whanganui. <\/p>\n Hipango said the community was invested \u201cin wanting to see the best in Whanganui\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m proud to sit alongside fellow elected councillors, with a focus on progressing the issues that currently face our city,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is new ground, for want of a word, and I\u2019m elated to see Whanganui embracing the retention of M\u0101ori wards. <\/p>\n \u201cIt is going to be a bit of a learning process around all the due diligence required at such a governance-type level, but I\u2019m very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n Herewini said she was feeling humbled, grateful for the support, and \u201ca little bit scared\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cBut I\u2019m ready for the challenge,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n \u201cI acknowledge everyone who stood in the M\u0101ori ward.<\/p>\n \u201cHuge fingers crossed that we retain the ward into the future, especially seeing that the Rangit\u012bkei and Manawat\u016b districts have lost their referendum.\u201d<\/p>\n For the Whanganui Rural Community Board, David Wells and Daryn Te Uamairangi have been elected in the Whanganui Community subdivision, beating Kiritahi Firmin and Jenny Tamakehu.<\/p>\n Jack Bullock, Brian Doughty and Quentin Handley were elected unopposed in the Kai Iwi subdivision, with Charlie Anderson and Bill Ashworth elected unopposed in the Kaitoke subdivision.<\/p>\n M\u0101ori ward referendum <\/p>\n Progress results indicate Whanganui will retain the M\u0101ori Ward for the 2028 and 2031 local elections, with 6663 voters in favour and 6213 against.<\/p>\n The Government-mandated referendum ran concurrently<\/a> with this year\u2019s election.<\/p>\n In October 2023, Whanganui councillors voted 8-5<\/a> to establish the ward, reaffirming the decision by 11-2<\/a> in September last year.<\/p>\n Mike Tweed is a multimedia journalist at the Whanganui Chronicle.
