{"id":73686,"date":"2025-10-12T11:04:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-12T11:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/73686\/"},"modified":"2025-10-12T11:04:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-12T11:04:13","slug":"westlands-jacquie-grant-poised-to-become-nzs-second-transgender-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/73686\/","title":{"rendered":"Westland&#8217;s Jacquie Grant poised to become NZ&#8217;s second transgender mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/4JZND0O_Jacquie_Grant_Facebook_jpg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"784\" alt=\"Jacquie Grant is claiming victory in the Westland mayoralty race with a lead of 64 votes.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nBusinesswoman Jacquie Grant is 64 votes ahead in Westland&#8217;s mayoral contest.<br \/>\nPhoto: Facebook\n<\/p>\n<p>Westland District may be about to get New Zealand&#8217;s oldest and second transgender mayor.<\/p>\n<p>Hokitika businesswoman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/ldr\/575670\/jacquie-grant-82-leads-westland-mayoral-race-by-narrow-margin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jacquie Grant, 82, leads the tight mayoral race<\/a>, but only by 64 votes, against incumbent Helen Lash.<\/p>\n<p>If elected, Grant would become New Zealand&#8217;s second transgender mayor, after the late Georgina Beyer became the world&#8217;s first openly transgender mayor in Carterton 30 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Grant told RNZ that being her age and transgender was &#8220;probably fairly unique&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most people my age are getting ready for a ride on the zimmer frame,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Age is just a number and the transgender thing is really&#8230; I think people in Westland are more interested in what&#8217;s between my ears than what was between my legs 55 years ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Provisional local election results would be confirmed on Sunday and final results declared on 16 October.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe there were 400 votes left to count, but it&#8217;s trending in the right way,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Grant, who runs a sock shop, was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the community in 1997 and promoted to Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Grant has campaigned on capping rates and taking back control, and said people in Westland wanted real change.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re suffering, because of the high rates bills, and they want someone who&#8217;s got the balls, I guess, to do it,&#8221; she said. &#8220;People just can&#8217;t afford to keep paying and paying, and we need to get that message through to central government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Grant described just how tough some were doing it in her community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve got neighbours who are living in one room in winter, because they can&#8217;t afford to heat their house,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That&#8217;s not the way we want to live in New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People who own their own homes should be reasonably rich or well off, but they&#8217;re not &#8211; they can&#8217;t afford to maintain them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/radionz.us6.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=211a938dcf3e634ba2427dde9&amp;id=b3d362e693\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for Ng\u0101 Pitopito K\u014drero<\/a>, a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Businesswoman Jacquie Grant is 64 votes ahead in Westland&#8217;s mayoral contest.
