Police say investigations are underway after a driver was killed following a police pursuit in Wh\u0101ngarei at the weekend.<\/p>\n
Northland District Commander, Superintendent Matt Srhoj, said officers saw a car travelling at high speed along Dave Culham Drive at 11.15pm on Saturday.<\/p>\n
“The police unit responded and the red and blue lights were activated on Riverside Drive,” he said. “The exact response will form part of the critical investigation.”<\/p>\n
The car crashed on Memorial Drive and the officers gave first aid, but the driver – who was alone in the vehicle – died at the scene.<\/p>\n
Matt Srhoj said several investigations were underway to establish all the facts surrounding the tragic incident.<\/p>\n
This included notifying the Independent Police Conduct Authority, as is standard procedure.<\/p>\n
“We are also working to support the family of the deceased, as well as our staff who were involved.”<\/p>\n
Police want witnesses or CCTV from the area between Port Road and Memorial Drive in Wh\u0101ngarei about 11.15pm on Saturday night.<\/p>\n
