{"id":76024,"date":"2025-10-13T16:38:19","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T16:38:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/76024\/"},"modified":"2025-10-13T16:38:19","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T16:38:19","slug":"sunlive-updated-election-results-increase-denyers-lead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/76024\/","title":{"rendered":"SunLive &#8211; Updated election results increase Denyer&#8217;s lead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The only change from Saturday\u2019s progress results was in the Maketu Community Board, where Weina Moko replaced Ieni (Beau) Walters in the top four elected positions.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The results between them and Sue Elliott remain very close, with just four votes separating the three.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The voter return was 37.61%, or 15,061 votes, excluding special votes.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Final results, including special results, will be confirmed by Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The new council will be sworn in on November 5.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Mayor-elect James Denyer increased his leading margin over closest rival Margaret Murray-Benge from 1443 votes to 1692.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Denyer has not said who he plans to make deputy mayor,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/western-bay-election-re-elected-mayor-james-denyer-begins-second-term-focused-on-housing-and-infrastructure\/WD3QPG7YGRGVZASVETVW3YUTMQ\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/western-bay-election-re-elected-mayor-james-denyer-begins-second-term-focused-on-housing-and-infrastructure\/WD3QPG7YGRGVZASVETVW3YUTMQ\/\">telling Local Democracy Reporting<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday he was thinking about it and planned to sit down with each councillor in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>There are three new faces on the council.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>It will also be the first term under new governance arrangements, with a mayor and nine councillors. Previously, there were 11 councillors.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Darlene Dinsdale will be the district\u2019s first Ma\u014dri ward councillor, preliminary results show.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>It will be her only term as the Waka Kai Uru M\u0101ori ward councillor. The district voted to remove the ward in a binding referendum.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary results show this vote was 8359 to remove against 5788 to retain.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Allan Sole and Rodney Joyce have been re-elected as Katikati-Waih\u012b Beach Ward councillors, based on preliminary results.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Margaret Murray-Benge was runner-up for mayor and re-elected to the Kaimai Ward.\"  data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Margaret Murray-Benge was runner-up for mayor and re-elected to the Kaimai Ward.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Newcomer Graeme Elvin will join current councillors Murray-Benge and Tracey Coxhead in the Kaimai ward.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>In the Maketu-Te Puke ward, Grant Dally and Laura Rae have been re-elected.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>First-time councillor Shane Beech will take the third Maketu-Te Puke seat. He had to pull out of the 2022 election at the last minute for health reasons.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Former councillor Anne Henry has been elected to the Katikati Community Board alongside John Clements, James Sayer and Norm Mayo.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The other Maketu Community Board members are Aleisha Waterhouse, Cecil Thomas and Elliott.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Wayne Stevenson, Gail Kelly, Heather Guptill and Ross Goudie are the Waih\u012b Beach Community Board members.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Under the new representation arrangements, two community boards now have subdivisions.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The new \u014cmokoroa members of the \u014cmokoroa-Kaimai Community Board are Chris Dever and Murray Marshall.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The Kaimai West members of the \u014cmokoroa-Kaimai Community Board are Tina Akuhata and Tania Tuhakaraina.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Kaimai East members of the \u014cmokoroa-Kaimai Community Board are Bevan Rakoia and Keith Wisnesky.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Te Puke members of the Te Puke\u2013East Community Board Subdivision are Dale Snell, Karen Summerhays and Marara Williams.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The east members are Sally Benning and Manvir Singh Mann, who were elected unopposed because two people stood for the two vacant seats.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\nBay of Plenty Regional Council&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Bay of Plenty Regional Council preliminary results have not yet landed.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Progress results show a mix of new and familiar faces and one very close race.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Current councillor Stuart Crosby is joined by Tim Maltby, Kate Graeme and Glenn Dougal in the Tauranga Constituency.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Two current councillors are in a tight race for the final Tauranga spot &#8211; Andrew von Dadelszen has a five-vote lead over Kat Macmillan, so this result may change.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Former Western Bay of Plenty Deputy Mayor John Scrimgeour has been elected to the Western Bay constituency alongside current regional councillor Ken Shirley.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Matemoana McDonald has been re-elected to the Mauao M\u0101ori Constituency.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Additional reporting Alisha Evans, Local Democracy Reporting.
