Black activewear on the way out?<\/p>\n
Ellie Nicholls was walking through Sydney\u2019s Bondi, fresh from a pilates class at the painfully trendy Body by Berner, which she described as \u201cthe it-girl pilates place in Bondi\u201d \u2013 when she pulled out her phone to share a surprise realisation.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy one takeaway is I\u2019m literally throwing out all of my black activewear and starting again,\u201d she said, while still wearing black activewear.<\/p>\n
\u201cLiterally no one was wearing black except for me and I looked like such a loser.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were in really cute colourful, or even other neutrals like grey, brown, sage, greeny kind of sets, and they looked so good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Naturally, those born before 1995 weren\u2019t happy with this info, and the comment section made it clear that Gen Z and the \u201cit girls\u201d will have to pry everyone\u2019s black activewear out of their calloused hands.<\/p>\n
\u201cI cannot wear any colour other than black! I SWEAT TOO MUCH,\u201d one user wrote.<\/p>\n
Another declared: \u201cBlack activewear will ALWAYS be chic doll, ALWAYS\u201d.<\/p>\n
Others urged Nicholls not to ditch her wardrobe over a fleeting trend.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t throw out your clothes!!!! It\u2019s a trend and black is forever,\u201d warned one viewer.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think all black looks so sleek,\u201d someone else claimed.<\/p>\n
Clearly, not everyone was ready to embrace this new style.<\/p>\n
In fact, one commenter said their entire city would fight to defend black activewear.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a Melbourne girl I\u2019m offended! Black workout gear only and forever,\u201d one Melburnian said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay but us Melbourne girlies can\u2019t stray from the black,\u201d another doubled down.<\/p>\n
And a Sydneysider replied: \u201cI\u2019m a Bondi girlie and stand out in my colourful sets every time I do a Melbourne class\u201d.<\/p>\n
A fashion stylist weighs in<\/p>\n
Fashion stylist Donny Galella quickly reassured the nation: black hasn\u2019t disappeared from gyms, even in Sydney\u2019s East.<\/p>\n
\u201cI totally disagree,\u201d he told news.com.au. \u201cI train at Conditn Randwick [a cool Eastern Suburbs studio] and do HIIT classes and reformer, and there is still a lot of black activewear.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s face it. Black is easy. When getting ready for the gym, black is easier to co-ordinate with clothes, shoes, socks, caps.\u201d<\/p>\n
But Galella admits that colour is having a moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are definitely seeing activewear move into fun colours and trend colours like beige, then we saw lots of brown (currently trending). But I feel black will always be the most popular workout colour,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
There are also practical reasons why black remains top.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnother reason black is most popular \u2013 it\u2019s less likely to show sweat stains. And for some, black is the most slimming,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Are brands pivoting to colour?<\/p>\n
If anyone\u2019s got a finger on the pulse, it\u2019s the people selling the tights.<\/p>\n
Matilda Robertson, co-owner and CEO of Stax, told news.com.au that black is still their bread and butter.<\/p>\n
\u201cBlack pieces are still our bestsellers at every launch, so I wouldn\u2019t say our customers have moved away from black completely,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut colour pieces \u2013 particularly pinks, purples, and blues \u2013 are gaining steam, especially as the weather warms up. Our girlie, colourful Bloom collection sold out instantly earlier this year, and we just restocked Peak Summer due to high demand for colour! Plus, we have a big summer planned, with lots of new styles and colours I\u2019m really excited for.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said they keep a close eye on the market to give people what they want.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere will always be black activewear, but our community loves colour too, so we make sure to include it as often as we can! Especially our community in Bondi!\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
From her personal view, she\u2019s not worried.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think a black set is still very chic, so I won\u2019t be removing the colour options from the website anytime soon \u2013 but it\u2019s fun to play with colours, especially as the weather warms up in Australia!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBlack activewear will always be fashionable in my opinion (even in Bondi!), but if you want to have some fun with colour \u2013 there are plenty of options.\u201d<\/p>\n
So while some fashion TikTokers might say black is on its way out, the bigger picture hints it\u2019s staying.<\/p>\n
And ultimately, we should all wear what makes us comfortable.<\/p>\n
