{"id":76735,"date":"2025-10-14T00:17:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T00:17:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/76735\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T00:17:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T00:17:14","slug":"the-planet-has-entered-a-new-reality-as-it-hits-its-first-climate-tipping-point-report-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/76735\/","title":{"rendered":"The planet has entered a \u2018new reality\u2019 as it hits its first climate tipping point, report finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgj7b9z400003b6n99li8ctl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The planet is grappling with a \u201cnew reality\u201d as it reaches the first in a series of catastrophic and potentially irreversible climate tipping points: the widespread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/23\/climate\/coral-bleaching-record\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">death of coral reefs<\/a>, according to a landmark report produced by 160 scientists across the world.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgkvxozz00023b6ngvifomb4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As humans burn fossil fuels and ratchet up temperatures, it\u2019s already driving more severe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/10\/climate\/heat-waves-fossil-fuel-majors\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heat waves<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/20\/climate\/summer-of-flooding\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">floods<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/23\/climate\/day-zero-drought-water-scarcity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">droughts<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/14\/climate\/los-angeles-fires-worse-global-warming\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wildfires<\/a>. But there are even bigger impacts on the horizon. Climate change may also be pushing Earth\u2019s crucial systems \u2014 from the Amazon rainforest to polar ice sheets \u2014 so far out of balance they collapse, sending catastrophic ripples across the planet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgjdggd1000y3b6nkwsw1gq6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are rapidly approaching multiple Earth system tipping points that could transform our world, with devastating consequences for people and nature,\u201d said Tim Lenton, a professor at the Global Systems Institute at the University of Exeter and an author of the report published Sunday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgjdggd1000z3b6nb6erxr5b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Warm water corals are the first, according to the report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgjdggd100103b6n6raij238@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since 2023, the world\u2019s reefs have been enduring the worst mass bleaching event on record as oceans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/19\/climate\/pacific-ocean-blob-hot-water-global-warming\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reach record high temperatures<\/a>, with more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/23\/climate\/coral-bleaching-record\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">80% <\/a>affected. What was an underwater riot of color and life is being replaced with a bleached, seaweed-dominated landscape.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgjdggd100113b6no2sx3czr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have now pushed (coral reefs) beyond what they can cope with,\u201d said Mike Barrett, chief scientific advisor at the World Wildlife Fund UK and co-author of the report. Unless global warming is reversed \u201cextensive reefs as we know them will be lost,\u201d the authors wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgjdggd100123b6nhs74534e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The impacts will have far-reaching consequences. Coral reefs are an essential habitat for marine species, vital for food security, contribute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/national\/habitat-conservation\/restoring-coral-reefs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">trillions to the global economy<\/a> and buffer coastal areas from storms.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-2158838048.jpg\" alt=\"Bleached corals around Koh Tao island, Thailand, on June 14, 2024. The planet is on the brink of several more tipping points as it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/08\/climate\/global-warming-limit-climate-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all but certain to breach<\/a> the globally agreed goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, according to the report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgjdggd100143b6ngza4w57a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the most alarming of these is the potential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/11\/climate\/ocean-currents-amoc-collapse-extreme-cold\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation<\/a>, a crucial network of ocean currents known as the AMOC. This would have catastrophic global consequences, pushing parts of the world into a deep freeze, heating up others, disrupting monsoon seasons and raising sea levels.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgjdggd100153b6nzzo9kjhs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere is now a risk that collapse could occur within the lifetime of people born and living on the planet today,\u201d Barrett said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgjdggd100163b6netsvvpwd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The world is not prepared for the impacts of crossing these tipping points, said Manjana Milkoreit, a researcher at the University of Oslo\u2019s Department of Sociology and Human Geography and a report author.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgjdggd100173b6ntptvz0ag@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Current policies and international agreements are \u201cdesigned for gradual changes, not for these kinds of abrupt, irreversible and interconnected shifts,\u201d she said. How governments respond now \u201ccould shape the Earth system for very long time,\u201d she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgjdggd100183b6nthwdkz4n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Actions the report calls for include rapidly reducing planet-heating pollution and scaling up carbon removal from the atmosphere.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgkleaw200083b6nailcxwmu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The world will overshoot 1.5 degrees, Lenton said, but the key will be minimizing further warming above this level and bringing the temperature back down as rapidly as possible.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgjdggd100193b6n9ffr52m6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Amid its alarming findings, the report also pulled out some positive news, including the \u201cradical global acceleration\u201d of solar power and electric vehicles, as well as batteries and heat pumps. Once replaced, polluting technologies are unlikely to come back as cleaner options are cheaper and better, it found.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgjdggd1001a3b6ncct1ufsu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The report comes just a month before governments gather in Brazil for COP30, the annual United Nations climate conference.
