{"id":77382,"date":"2025-10-14T08:07:37","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T08:07:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/77382\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T08:07:37","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T08:07:37","slug":"homegrown-quantum-processor-passes-telstras-tests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/77382\/","title":{"rendered":"Homegrown quantum processor passes Telstra&#8217;s tests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"211\" data-end=\"531\">An Australian-made quantum machine learning processor has delivered results in days that conventional deep learning models took weeks to achieve, according to the country\u2019s largest telco.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"211\" data-end=\"531\">Telstra on Monday said it had successfully tested the Silicon Quantum Computing (SQC) hardware over the last 12 months as part of a joint initiative to take quantum computing out of the lab.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"211\" data-end=\"531\">The work focused on how SQC\u2019s Quantum Machine Learning (QML) processor could be used to enhance predictive network analytics, one of Telstra\u2019s most complex operational challenges.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-69063\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Michelle-Simmons-CEO_800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"  \/>SQC chief executive Michelle Simmons. Image: Supplied<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"924\" data-end=\"1242\">The QML processor, dubbed Watermelon, was tested to assess whether its quantum-generated features could forecast network performance and how they compared against Telstra\u2019s deep-learning AI model.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"924\" data-end=\"1242\">Telstra currently uses a combination of machine learning and AI to help predict network performance and detect changes in network patterns, allowing the company to fix issues that arise \u2013 sometimes before customers are impacted.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"924\" data-end=\"1242\">The tests revealed that the QML could match the accuracy of Telstra\u2019s current model without the heavy GPU power demands of conventional AI systems and could be trained much faster.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"924\" data-end=\"1242\">\u201cThis trial shows how quantum capabilities could complement our existing systems and technology to deliver faster insights and better outcomes for our customers,\u201d Telstra\u2019s group executive of global networks and technology Shailin Sehgal said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1569\" data-end=\"1950\">\u201cThe collaboration, and Telstra\u2019s relationship with SQC, shows how Australian industries and homegrown innovation can work together to shape the nation\u2019s digital future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-69064\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Watermelon-schematic_800x600.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"  \/>Watermelon schematic: A quantum feature generator for machine learning (accessed on-prem or cloud). Image: Supplied<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1569\" data-end=\"1950\">SQC chief executive Professor Michelle Simmons said the project demonstrated how application-specific quantum systems can already deliver commercial value in data-intensive industries.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2610\">\u201cThis is an exciting and important step forward in the commercial adoption of quantum technologies,\u201d Professor Simmons said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2610\">\u201cThe collaboration with Telstra allowed us to test Watermelon in a real-world telecommunications context \u2014 something few quantum companies have achieved. Watermelon\u2019s quantum feature generation helps to reveal complex relationships within classical data, while dramatically reducing training time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2610\">SQC earlier this year also entered a $3.2 million contract to provide Defence with the QML processor, which the company says \u201cworks exceptionally well when applied to sparse, fuzzy datasets\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2610\">At SXSW Sydney last year, Professor Simmons\u00a0said the company\u2019s first commercial products would focus on quantum systems designed to accelerate artificial intelligence rather than universal quantum computing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3367\" data-end=\"3690\">The development also fits into a wider national movement toward sustainable and energy-efficient AI.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3367\" data-end=\"3690\">Datacentre energy consumption is projected to more than double to 945 TWh by 2030, according to the International Energy Agency \u2014 a figure that underscores the value of AI models that train faster and consume less power.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3367\" data-end=\"3690\">With Justin Hendry<\/p>\n<p class=\"end-text\">Do you know more?
