Image: InSyde Media<\/p>\n<p>The duo had been touted as one of the combinations to beat ever since Winterbottom announced a fairytale return to Tickford Racing late last year.<\/p>\n<p>Waters qualified on the front-row and was leading the race 66 laps in after coming out on top in a thrilling battle with Brodie Kostecki as rain fell.<\/p>\n<p>He pitted that lap for a move to wets and to hand the car over to Winterbottom. It proved the beginning of the end for the Monster Mustang\u2019s chances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just lost our way a little bit. I\u2019m not sure what happened,\u201d surmised Winterbottom, who was sent out on wets, called in again for slicks and then switched back to wets within just four laps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pitted and we were pitting, we weren\u2019t pitting, then we pitted and couldn\u2019t get the [seat] belt on because it fell down the side. Sort of one thing flowed onto the next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then I went on to slicks and then I went on to wets and ultimately, at the end of the day, I made a mistake and cost Cam a chance of fighting at the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">DRAMA FOR THE #6 \ud83d\ude31<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RepcoSC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#RepcoSC<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Supercars?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#Supercars<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Bathurst1000?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#Bathurst1000<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/79DjwksStl\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/79DjwksStl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Supercars (@supercars) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/supercars\/status\/1977218094410911902?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">October 12, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Winterbottom found the fence at Forrest\u2019s Elbow while down in 22nd place and on cold wet tyres on lap 70, damaging the car\u2019s right-front corner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty gutted in myself to be honest,\u201d Winterbottom continued. \u201cYou know, you pride yourself on not making mistakes and locking a tyre and nudging the fence is on me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Winterbottom rejoined the race a lap down following repairs and, later receiving a Safety Car wave-around, they eventually finished on the lead lap in 12th place.<\/p>\n<p>The result leaves Waters still chasing his first Great Race victory after 14 attempts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were looking really good there for a bit,\u201d Waters surmised. \u201cShit happens, but we\u2019ll conquer this place one day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sister Thomas Randle\/James Moffat Tickford Mustang was classified just one spot further up in 11th after a wild day that included two penalties.<\/p>\n<p>That result, though, was enough to ensure Randle joins Waters in the inaugural Finals Series that kicks off on the Gold Coast in less than a fortnight.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The wounded Monster Mustang after Winterbottom&#8217;s crash.
