N\u00e9o Koslowski (Germany) braves the weather to portray this lark paused, head to wind, eyes closed against the swirling sand.<\/p>\n
On the small North Sea island of Du\u0308ne, N\u00e9o pressed himself into the sand, his eyes on a horned lark that had been gradually approaching him as it searched for food.<\/p>\n
He deftly photographed the scene \u2013 then spent an hour or so removing sand from his kit and ears.<\/p>\n
Horned larks are widespread. In Eurasia, these songbirds breed in Scandinavia and Arctic Russia. They migrate south in autumn, with small numbers visiting North Sea coasts.<\/p>\n
