(ABC News: Michael Franchi)<\/p>\n<p>Drop off in economic growth expected<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The official \u2014 and unofficial \u2014 expectation is that the impact of the new world of tariffs on Singapore directly, and indirectly through their impact on broader trade, will be a halving of Singapore&#8217;s healthy and consistent growth rate in recent years of about 4 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Economic growth figures released on Tuesday confirmed the reasons for concern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The economy grew at an annual pace of 2.9 per cent in the third quarter of 2025, moderating from the 4.5 per cent growth in the previous quarter, according to the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"People line up at food stalls in Singapore\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/27f28e27f9ced8b0105fc4716cdc3fbd\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Economic growth in Singapore has been forecast to as much as halve. (ABC News: Michael Franchi)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Joo said a lot of customers, and companies, were holding back orders due to both the economic uncertainty created by tariffs, and also uncertainty created by the ongoing negotiations between the Trump administration and different countries in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">South-East Asia has a history of highly mobile manufacturing bases responding to changing economic conditions \u2014 for example, sub contractors to Chinese manufacturers moving as comparative wage levels change between countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re starting to see companies moving from the original source of countries, where they have been manufacturing their components or their finished products, and moving manufacturing nearer to them,&#8221; Mr Joo reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Joo believes Singapore is in a good position to be providing those services, as well as just-in-time manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8221;Because Singapore is still at 10 per cent, it is not that bad. (ABC News: Michael Franchi)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Joseph Liow, of the National University of Singapore, said that whatever was going on within the Singapore economy as a result of tariffs, &#8220;there&#8217;s a larger dynamic at work as well&#8221; because of the regional disruption the tariffs were causing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some of the highest tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have fallen on Singapore&#8217;s neighbours with rates as high as 46 and 49 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Cambodia and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-13\/can-vietnam-survive-trump-tariffs\/105263166\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105263166\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vietnam were both hit particularly hard because so many of their exports go to the US<\/a>: 40 per cent in the case of Cambodia and roughly a quarter for Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines all faced heavy, but different, tariff rates.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ships and containers at a trade port, with overcast skies\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/57402cf3d8e2bca33dfe85f4fc2367d1\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Singapore is a key logistics and trading hub in South-East Asia. (ABC News: Michael Franchi)<\/p>\n<p>Soul-searching for South-East Asian nations<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There has been some soul-searching going on among South-East Asian nations about how they collectively respond to the challenge \u2014 particularly through the Association of South East Asian Nations (or ASEAN).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We in South-East Asia also have to do our part to make ourselves a more attractive single market,&#8221; Mr Wong said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s still a lot of work to be done, because ASEAN is virtually tariff-free, but it&#8217;s not an easy place to do business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s complex. (ABC News: Michael Franchi)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Then there is the uncertainty associated with another aspect of US policy \u2014 potential conflict over Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">According to Professor Liow, that carries problems with it even without actual physical conflict breaking out<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t even need to think about kinetic conflict,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Even if there is a very sharp downturn in relations \u2014 an economic blockade or whatever \u2014 that will already have quite a significant impact on the region simply because of how interconnected we are with East Asia in general and with Taiwan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-10\/china-rare-earth-exports-limited-further\/105874886\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China tightens rare earth export rules further<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The issue has been a key sticking point in the trade war between Beijing and Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-10-22\/silicon-chip-semiconductor-dominance-tsmc-nvidia\/104497676\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104497676\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">He pointed to the risks around semiconductor supplies<\/a>, a story he said &#8220;everybody knows&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t have to labour that point, but that is the situation that the region faces, so if something happens there, it&#8217;s very difficult for us to insulate ourselves from.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Part of the risk will lie in the US and China demanding the South-East Asia region take a side, he warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We certainly don&#8217;t want to. We would rather not,&#8221; Professor Liow said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t want to be in that position, but that is a reality that we need to come to terms with.&#8221;Singapore and Australia upgrade strategic relationship<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-07\/singapore-wants-to-expand-its-military-ties-with-australia\/105856094\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105856094\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prime Minister Wong visited Australia last week<\/a> and signed an upgraded strategic relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">One part of that concerned partnerships on the green economy, including <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/darwin-breakfast\/suncable-data-centres\/105760692\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/audiosegment\/105760692\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the SunCable project in Darwin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Singapore&#8217;s exceptionally constrained geography means it cannot really contemplate large-scale renewables.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are too small.
