A man has been charged with manslaughter in relation to the disappearance of Jason Butler who went missing in the Rauk\u016bmara Ranges four years ago.<\/p>\n
On 23 October 2021, Butler was taken into the bush on unapproved work experience by a Department of Conservation contractor.<\/p>\n
Earlier that month he had been admitted to Whak\u0101tane hospital under the Mental Health Act, but he discharged himself several days later.<\/p>\n
Eastern Bay of Plenty police investigations manager detective Senior Sergeant Paul Wilson said a 57-year-old man was arrested on Friday after search warrants were executed in \u014cp\u014dtiki and \u014cm\u0101io.<\/p>\n
He was due to appear in Whakat\u0101ne District Court on Friday and the Crown would oppose bail.<\/p>\n
Senior Sergeant Wilson said despite extensive searches in and around the \u014cm\u0101io area, including along the Haparapara River and bush areas, Butler had sadly not been found.<\/p>\n
“I want to acknowledge the wh\u0101nau of Jason.<\/p>\n
“This week is the four-year anniversary of his disappearance, and I know they are still feeling his loss deeply.<\/p>\n
“While I know we haven’t been able to bring Jason home, I hope this gives them some kind of closure.”<\/p>\n
As the matter was now before the courts, police said they would not comment further.<\/p>\n
