Berlin became a pumping techno and rave hub in the years following the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall, as an anarchic counterculture moved into abandoned industrial sites to create music, dance and art spaces.<\/p>\n
In the decades since, population growth in the capital of reunified Germany and gentrification have transformed the city once famously dubbed \u201cpoor but sexy\u201d by former mayor Klaus Wowereit.<\/p>\n
Clubs have taken a hammering in recent years, between the Covid-19 pandemic, soaring inflation, a decline in budget flights bringing weekend revellers, and some youngsters\u2019 shift away from clubbing to outdoor music festivals.<\/p>\n
The business squeeze has in turn led many establishments to raise entry charges and drinks prices, setting off a vicious circle where many young people and stalwarts of the scene feel priced out.<\/p>\n
The world-famous Berghain club is still going strong, but the phenomenon dubbed \u201cclub death\u201d has since claimed some of Berlin\u2019s other famous nightspots.<\/p>\n

Late last year, the Clubcommission, the association representing Berlin\u2019s clubs, sounded the alarm, saying 46% of its members were considering closing within 12 months.<\/p>\n
Almost two-thirds of them said they had recently suffered a \u201cconsiderable\u201d drop in takings.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s the fate that has befallen SchwuZ, whose director Katja Jaeger says is \u201cthe oldest and biggest queer club in Germany\u201d, if not Europe.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom 2024 onwards we have really noticed a fall in profits,\u201d she told AFP, adding that this had resulted in a shortfall of around \u20ac50,000 ($101,507) a month.<\/p>\n
The clubbers still gracing the doors aren\u2019t as loose with their cash as they used to be.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople won\u2019t have three or four drinks, maybe just one,\u201d said Jaeger.<\/p>\n
In July, SchwuZ was forced to declare bankruptcy and to appeal to the city\u2019s LGBTQ community to \u201ccome back to party\u201d to avoid the venue closing for good.<\/p>\n
It also launched a fundraising appeal late last month that has netted around \u20ac51,000 in donations to date.<\/p>\n
Jaeger says that SchwuZ is also trying to exploit its 1600sqm of real estate by renting it out for private events, plays and daytime parties as well as nights dedicated to younger people, goth or Latin music.<\/p>\n
Similar responses to the crisis could be spotted at a festival organised by the Clubcommission which ended on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Alongside exhibitions and performances linking club culture to other parts of the Berlin arts scene, the festival awarded prizes to certain clubs for their initiatives.<\/p>\n
One of them was Maaya, a new cultural centre inspired by Africa and its diaspora.<\/p>\n
With music nights, a swimming pool, food and other cultural events, Maaya has been \u201ca great success\u201d since launching last year, one of the founders, Aziz Sarr, told AFP.<\/p>\n
Clubcommission director Katharin Ahrend pointed out that it\u2019s not all doom and gloom.<\/p>\n
\u201cNew projects are emerging, new places are opening, even if not that many,\u201d she told AFP.<\/p>\n
Clubcommission spokeswoman Emiko Gejic said there are \u201clots of new formats, collectives of queer people and people of colour, and sober raves\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think Berlin is a city that\u2019s always going to be reinventing itself,\u201d regular party-goer Anne, 32, told AFP.<\/p>\n
She said she had enjoyed some of the newer spaces even more because they were \u201ccreating new ways to experience nightlife\u201d outside what she called \u201cthe hegemony of the big Berlin clubs\u201d.<\/p>\n
