State Highway 8 has reopened near Tekapo after a truck’s trailer unit was blown on to its side this morning, closing the road for much of the day.<\/p>\n
Police said they were called about 7:10am to reports of a single-vehicle crash on the highway near the intersection with Tekapo Canal Rd.<\/p>\n
“No injuries were reported; however, the road does look to be completely blocked near the Tekapo Pukaki canal bridge.”<\/p>\n
A photograph posted on the Tekapo Community Facebook page showed a Mainfreight truck across both lanes of the highway bridge with the trailer on its side on the roadside barrier.<\/p>\n
Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Simon Lyford said the strong winds that caused havoc across much of the South this morning had blown the trailer over.<\/p>\n
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi early this afternoon said the winds were hampering efforts to remove of the trailer, but in an update about 2.45pm said the highway had reopened.<\/p>\n
MetService earlier warned of very strong winds for much of the South Island today, and more wild weather to come through the week.<\/p>\n
