For most of Hamish Elsmann’s adult life, communication has felt an impossibly distant task.

Then, one day, he sat at a public piano and began to play.

As his fingers fumbled up and down the keys, something clicked. Music became a language his mind could grasp.

Hamish, 42, has autism and schizoaffective disorder and lives with his father in Merino, a tiny town four hours west of Melbourne.

Every week, the father and son make the hour-long round trip to Hamilton, where Hamish plays the grand piano at the local art gallery before sketching at the library next door.

He then leaves his finished drawings for staff at the gallery’s front desk — sometimes simply sliding them under the door.

The ritual has opened a world that once felt closed.

His responses, once fragmented and brief, grew into full conversations. Words that had felt trapped began to flow.

“It all translated into him being able to actually express himself in a way that we could all understand,” his father, Johan, 79 said.

“I was totally astonished at the impact of just having access to music and art … it allowed his brain to structure his thoughts in a way he could communicate them with the rest of us.”

A secret collection

Hamish said his piano compositions often started as recollections of his dreams.

His drawings became a map for navigating social life — a visual diary of how he makes sense of others.

“They’re basically psychological mishaps, turned into life lessons,” he said.

“The sketches are actually there for me to go back to just in case I forget a social nuance that I want to expound upon.”

What Hamish did not know was that Hamilton Art Gallery staff members Zac Grenfell and Madi Whyte had been quietly keeping every sketch he left behind — more than 250 over the years.

They saw something the artist himself had not: a body of work worth celebrating.

Curator Samantha Happe turned those sketches into Hello Hamish, a surprise exhibition celebrating their secret artist-in-residence.

Hamish walked into the gallery on his father’s 79th birthday this year.

The room was filled with his sketches — abstract faces, animals, fragmented thoughts made visible — surrounding the grand piano in the centre.

“Oh really, oh wow!” his voice echoed through the space.

He moved straight to the piano and played one of his most joyous compositions yet.

For his father, watching from the doorway, the moment represented something profound.

“He gave them his heart, but they’ve given him a place in society,” Johan said.

“I find that to be fabulous: it’s something that no amount of medicine, counselling [or] professional attention could ever do for him.”

The exhibition has given his son something he never thought possible: a place in the world.

“It may sound a little bit weird, but I’m getting to the point where I’m happy to leave now,” he said, tears welling.

Hello Hamish

Hello Hamish is the catchcry that echoes through the gallery each time the Elsmanns visit.

It will be heard more frequently over the next few weeks, with the gallery extending the show’s run until early November due to popular demand.

Hamish is remaining humble in the face of his new-found celebrity status.

But the impact is tangible and real.

“I definitely feel better about myself,” he said.

“Also, playing with other people in mind, [I’m] hoping I can strum on some heart-chords, that’s really important to me.

“I enjoy the possibility of having more friends, so that’s a good thing.”

The exhibition was never meant to be a statement, curator Samantha Happe said.

“We were doing this for Hamish. We wanted him to be able to see all these works that he has donated to us over the years,” Dr Happe said.

“It was a complete surprise when people said, ‘Oh it’s Hamish, let me have a look, these are incredible.'”

A place in the world

Johan has recently started teaching Hamish how to drive, a traditional paternal milestone he thought he would never reach.

It is a significant step along Hamish’s journey to independence, and something his father never would have thought possible before his son unlocked his voice from the piano stool.

Hamish has plans beyond piano and sketching.

Driving is just the beginning: he is also teaching himself to sew.

On a recent afternoon, Hamish sat at the gallery’s piano, fingers moving across the keys while visitors to his exhibition watched.

At one point, he turned his back to the piano and kept playing, delighting the crowd.

When he finished, he smiled, gave a small bow, and then offered anyone in the room a piano lesson.

After that, he left the room to continue sketching in the library.

The ritual continues. But now, when he returns, people know his name.
