A local state of emergency has been declared for the Canterbury region.<\/p>\n
MetService has renewed weather warnings across central and southern New Zealand, including three red-level strong wind warnings in Canterbury, Wellington and Wairarapa south of Carterton for tomorrow.<\/p>\n
“The state of local emergency will ensure local Civil Defence have access to the emergency powers they need to respond and support emergency services during this event,” Civil Defence Minister Mark Mitchell says.<\/p>\n
Five homes have been destroyed by fire in Kaik\u014dura, with multiple blazes across the country fanned by high winds.<\/p>\n
