Northland Waste has taken over kerbside recycling in the Mid North, but some people aren\u2019t happy with the payment terms.<\/p>\n
The changes apply to residents of the Mid North including Kerikeri, Kawakawa, Moerewa, \u014chaeawai, \u014cpua, Paihia, P\u0101karaka, Kaikohe, \u014ckaihau, and Waipapa. <\/p>\n
Kerikeri resident Jennifer Jenkins said she hasn\u2019t signed up for kerbside recycling because of the \u201csignificant\u201d cost, opting to take her recycling to the Waipapa transfer station instead. <\/p>\n
She preferred the previous system where she could buy tags at the supermarket when she needed them. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a discouragement from recycling because they\u2019re expecting a regular fee and when you don\u2019t fill your bin every week, you\u2019re still having to pay for it. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t fill our recycle bin that frequently, so we were getting a tag and putting it outside when it was full. <\/p>\n
\u201cNow, you only have to walk past the rubbish bags and you can see people are putting all their rubbish in bags. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re not recycling anymore.\u201d <\/p>\n
Northland Waste branch manager Darryn Shanks said the locally owned company took over the contract to ensure people still had a way to recycle. <\/p>\n
He was \u201cconcerned\u201d some people were put off recycling because of the changes. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you break it down, it\u2019s about $1.60 a week for a recycled crate. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a bit concerning that people will chuck it out rather than recycle – but what can we do?\u201d <\/p>\n
Paihia ratepayers advocate Jane Johnston said Bay of Islands residents could take their recycling to Waipapa, Waitangi, or Whangae transfer stations, along with others, for free. <\/p>\n
\u201cYou only have to pay if you want the convenience of a pick-up. <\/p>\n
\u201cPlan your trips around dropping off recycling for free at a depot.\u201d <\/p>\n
FNDC delivery and operations group manager Ruben Garcia said Northland Waste offered its recycling service \u201cindependently of the council\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny decisions regarding kerbside services and their commercial viability are up to the company providing the service\u201d. <\/p>\n
